Live On Ten Legs: Official Album Thread

Post by VinylGuy »

Put this vinyl after a loong time..and yeah its a really good compilation...RVM and NAIS are both amazing renditions.
Even if the die hards dont really need this record, still is a great showcase of the band.

It was nice to finally hear Eliason's mixing again, but the choices they made on this are kind of baffling. There was plenty of better versions of some of those songs they could have chosen (Animal, Alive and Yellow Ledbetter are particularly pedestrian versions) and the tracklisting itself is a little strange - opening with Arms Aloft, etc.

Yeah, and they leaned too heavily on the last half of the decade.

you think? i guess they tried to balance the tracklist more than the previous live record, because its does have some hits like jeremy, alive, animal, rvm, yl...i was pretty mad there was so little from The avocado record, being that some of the 06 versions are amazing, and Severed Hand and Life Wasted should have been here too...
Yeah the covers were strange, because they had play them little and in recent shows...now, its cool to have Public Image on vinyl though.

I'm talking about when they took the performances from. Pre-06 tours are severely underrepresented.

There were plenty of better performances from 2006-2010 they could've chosen, though.

I don't mind that those years were the focus of the compilation, I just think they make some questionable selections.

Isn't "Alive" a hybrid version, the music from one show (Philly 09?) with the vocal track piped in from another? I was so baffled by that--I wonder what was so special about that version that they felt they had to save it instead of just use one of the other 200 perfectly solid versions of the song from the last five years.

This is a spotty compilation for me. The performances really weren't well-selected, and the transitions between years are way more jarring than they ought to be for a band that changes so little in its approach from year to year.

I like this album way more than I thought I would. And I really like opening with Arms Aloft. When this came out, I very often put it on when I went on a half hour run. Arms Aloft, WWS, Got Some, Animal, SOLAT, (I Am Mine), Unthought Known, RVM. Great energy for this first half of the record!

I don't listen to it anymore. Eventhough it's a good live album it's doesn't add much to their catalog. Whereas LO2L did add a lot. It could have been much more interesting to me if this live album focussed on their 2000-2009 output, and followed the same order as LO2L which was 3 songs from every record they had released so far. So that it would have been a really nice companion to LO2L. Ive picked three songs from binaural, RA, Lost Dogs, S/T, backspacer and 1 cover (the LO2L formula ;) )

01-Off The Girl
02-Save You
03-The Fixer
04-Severed Hand
05-Down
06-I am Mine
07-Sad
08-Love Boat Captain
09-Nothings as it Seems
10-Insignificance
11-Amongst the Waves
12-Unemployable
13-Just Breath
14-All Night
15-Comatose
16-The Real Me

What would your 16 tracks be, using the LO2L formula ;) ?

I've listened to this record and thought "wow, the band and I really differ on what there best work is over the years". This and two legs are built on carefully played and sung songs. There are never any songs where ed blows his vocals out or where these is an edge by the band.

i have the feeling both of this records arent for the die hard fan, but for the casual listener. Even if LO2L´s tracklist wasnt heavy on the hits, you could say it was more oriented to that.

I remember hating life when they went from Release -> Arms Aloft at PJ 20

The whole place just died after that massive build up.

it really did. it's not a bad song, but it absolutely was one of the worst places to put it.

I dig the idea of putting together our own version of Live On Ten Legs (thanks joostone!). I have given this some thought and came up with what I feel is a cool compilation. I used the formula that was specified (three songs from each album 2000-2009 and one cover). I've listened through this and it feels really cohesive and I think it sounds pretty damn cool. I think it tells a good story, a nice progression of thought (especially tracks 7-15). I didn't make this about only including my favorite songs from the era (although many are included, many are also left off), but more about the listening experience. I think it worked out quite nicely. Thoughts?

1. Severed Hand
2. Education
3. You Are
4. Cropduster
5. Nothing As It Seems
6. Johnny Guitar
7. Unemployable
8. Army Reserve
9. Grievance
10. Sad
11. The Fixer
12. I Am Mine
13. Rival
14. Hard To Imagine
15. The End
16. Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns

You know, when I say that I haven't listened to this band's post-03 live output, I always forget that I listened to this album once. It was a...forgettable...experience.

Yeah, those of you who are official boot bangers should really create a replacement Live on Ten Legs for those of us who can't be bothered. I imagine it would have to be an improvement.

That would be cool, though the mixing on the 2008-2010 boots renders them almost unlistenable.

I had a 3+ hour drive home from work today and listened through the compilation I made again. It is now my official Live On Ten Legs. ;)

Spenno and Pete put up some good collections that I still listen to from time to time on the old board, though you might have already grabbed some of them.

This one was always my favorite:
Black Market Avocado

If I had the gumption, I'd organize a tournament in which contestants craft competing Live on Ten Legs-type compilations.

You're a sweet man, Reid.

I felt as though the one linked to above came out quite well, as did my Europe 2012 mix.

I'm on my phone, so I can't check, but let me know if the links are dead and I'll reupload them.
