March Madness 2019 - Feb 11th start

Post by stip »

Hi team,

March Madness begins Feb 11th this year. This year we will be voting on the best live performance, using Ridelybradout's massive and amazing 11 disc comp.

Comp is here: https://mega.nz/#F!H1YwlRgD!8HH5QWn6REg-ZFKe9IKbOg

Bracket it here: https://challonge.com/fyh7yvlt Seeding is totally random

I'll be posting videos wherever possible. I'm looking for an assist - some generous soul who can link the audio for each matchup.

We've got one week before the start, so please take a look and let me know what needs to change before we get started

Probably too late for this suggestion, but it would have been cool to have multiple versions of the same song seeded and give everyone an opportunity to debate tour/drummer merit with the control being the song.

We do this at the end with each quarter finalist.

Best live performance? Seriously? Yuck. Count me out this year, I guess.

I don't think I have the strength to listen to 4GB worth of live Pearl Jam, so I think I'll just use studio versions and then listen to these quarter finalists live.

Remarkably I left out the word “could”. We could do this.

Also I don’t know if I can be bothered listening to any PJ at the moment.

With respect to the tendency these things always have to come back around, I feel super burnt-out on PJ of any kind, and I haven't even listened to them very much in the last year or so. March Madness sounds daunting and tiring.

Optimistically, this could reignite your interest. I will try to give these each a listen. The first rounds sound a bit daunting but as it narrows it should be an interesting spin on things.

I've often found this to be the case; PJ for some reasons tends to be a band I listen to mostly in this time of year anyways, but I find the March Madness tournaments usually give me a way back in; certainly the past few years, I've listened to PJ far more in Feb-April than the rest of the year. I don't think that's wholly the tournaments, but it's certainly a big part of it.

I'll also enjoy this as while I have shows and song performances I love, I'm not super well-versed in "all-time great versions" of all the songs. This sounds like a cool way to do it.

Honestly, the first round is usually my favorite round in any of these tournaments. I could be misremembering, but I feel like the first time a song comes up is usually when people have the most to say about it, where later rounds just become rote exercises in people voting on what's "better," which is not interesting to me.

But optimistically, yes, this could ignite a PJ kick. We've just done this so many times.

Is it? I don't think it's part of Ridley's comp.

I personally wouldn't update the comp for it. Good man, old Ridley.

Have a good time, team. I don't know live versions well enough to participate. It'll be weird not being involved in one of these but it'll be good for me, probably.
