Well, it’s coming a lot sooner than we thought. Studies have shown after an adjustement period it will be a massive boost for the country south but especially up north. But as a whole.
Massive and intensive efforts towards planning and reframing and possibly redefining our republic and even rewriting the constitution to include the Protestant/unionist(formerly?) community will be needed. Possibly into a federal state of government by most accounts.

The EU stance is in the event of a 50+1 referendum on reunification in the north and the Republic, Northern Ireland will be granted automatic entrance into the EU. They’ll fund it even more than they do now. (That funding is about to disappear if the UK crashes out of the EU, which is looking likely).

Sinn Fein are on top of it calling for an all island all party forum to prepare for it. The government don’t want this right now and are saying it’s not the time.
They said the same on the marriage equality and abortion referenda and we saw the public was decades ahead of them and they soon changed their tune and made it look like they were on board all along. Politicians eh?

This is going to become a thing more and more so I thought I’d start a thread even as a placeholder.

Do we want it? That changes a lot but especially lately. Do we need it? They’re gonna need us in a bad way in case of brexit crash out.
We cannot have a hard border on the island. It won’t work on countless endless levels and will cause untold damage.

So it’s a matter of time. UK crashes out? Within 5 years. Maybe sooner. Some form of Brexit agreement reached? Who knows.

Blend what I want but also what I think is about to happen based on all the available evidence and information.

1. A second referendum in the uk.
This is a pipe dream and would cause as much chaos and more division than there already is.
But no brexit at all is now a reality given tonight’s vote result in HoC


2. A crash out no deal exit
Britain(meaning England) would quickly soon learn its true place and be stripped of any notions of being a world power and its inbuilt delusion of imperial reign would be obliterated.
The US has already laid down the most severe trading conditions that would strip the national health service and sell it to private interests as in the US. Not to mention food health standards. India and China are going to go even harder and cut them up. Let’s avoid that for the good of all.

3. Scottish independence referendum and a United Ireland referendum in Ireland north and south.
These should be at number one cos they’re the most likely outcomes. I want Scotland to have full self determination more than I want a United Ireland. Mainly cos I don’t want my country swamped by a bunch of flat earther self destructive bigots like the DUP

Here’s the bizarre thing.

They’d probably follow Sinn Feins model and impose abstention. They’d never take their seats. Despite being elected.
Sinn Fein Have elected MPs in the British Parliament since forever who don’t take their seats cos they have to swear an oath to the British monarch of the day. And that won’t happen cos a few million valid reasons not to.

But they have a sizeable cohort and would have about 15/20% representatives of the whole of the country, based on our current system and their results at the ballot box up north.


*in case of reunification our entire constitution would need to be totally rewritten and they’d be at the table and involved. But they’re against things like gay people marriage equality abortion and us in general, (meaning catholics. Even though Catholicism is all but dead here) so it would be thorny *if* they came to table.
They have so much in common with the Catholic Church it’s hilarious but they don’t realise or understand.

As with the current Good Friday agreement it would probably follow they could self identify as British but that’s pretty much all. They wouldn’t be forced to speak irish (rule for teachers and police/army (recently dropped for those last two) and the angelus would be dropped from tv and radio (it’s still played on our national stations at 12 and 6pm).

They’d insist on a new flag, even though they’re represented on our flag in the orange.
They’d insist on a new anthem.

I’m an idiot but the last two? That’s what will break the camels back. No way at all will we change those. Would America?

The main funny part about all this is when that referendum gets called for Irish unity,

Weird thing about that.
I don’t know how much you pay attention to the rugby.

But it’s an all island team. Called Ireland. players from north and south.
It works. Two anthems. One team.
(For bystanders, Ireland’s national anthem is called the soldiers song, and it’s pretty much about resistance and rebellion against the Brits.)
My solution to the anthem would be keep the melody and find a way in the words.
We’re good at this stuff. We can do this. For all of us.
