On the record: if Lightning Bolt turns out to be good, I'm getting a Lightning Bolt tattoo, designed myself. It'd actually fit the imagery I have already quite well I think.

Is he really doing this? I hope he gets it in black, not white.
Or maybe black on the right arm and white on the left.

pearl jam are approaching their 50s. they'll make mediocre/solid albums that'll get the usual solid 4 star reviews. they won't make bad music (they're too talented for that) but they'll churn out the same stuff from here on out, because that's what rock bands do. if you want interesting/challenging music, then listen to the endless younger bands out there that are making vital exciting music like vitalogy and no code. my pick? arctic monkeys, they're going through their "anti commercial experimental no code" phase.
no band releases masterpieces after 20 years of playing together. great albums? possibly, but nothing ever approaches the greatness of their early records. it's a cliche, but the early stuff is always better.
lightning bolt will be a solid dependable pearl jam album with a few rockin' riffs and a few sentimental ballads. rolling stone will give it 4 stars. it'll get nominated for some grammys, but won't win any. it'll debut at number 1 in its first week and plummet in the following weeks.

There are so many better young, vital artists than Arctic Monkeys. Go listen to The Naked & Famous.harmless wrote:Is that what that is? Or old solo artists. They typically have a late era boom that often rivals the best moments of their early days.lecherouslittlestump wrote:if you want interesting/challenging music, then listen to the endless younger bands
I think one of the reasons some of us are so frustrated is that it never seems like Pearl Jam got where they were going, and so it feels like all they ever really managed was the potential for something more. That, and they made some records that seemed just as rooted in the music solo artists make as it did in the band-built ones, so it's easier to judge them by solo artist achievements than some other acts.

They do suck but other than that his description of LB and its reception seems spot on.harmless wrote:Is that what that is? Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
There is absolutely nothing original about even their most inventive songs. So in that sense, they're a good comparison with PJ.

I wonder if artists in bands just don't feel like fighting with each other anymore at a certain point, so there is less singular vision and more compromise.McParadigm wrote:Or old solo artists.
