Im sure it changed a lot. But he still did his solo tour and the pj tour. He havent released a solo album since uke songs and those were old songs.

Just because he hasn’t released anything doesn’t mean he hasn’t written anything. For all we know, he had stuff that seemed ready to put towards a new PJ album. But, Cornell’s death may have made him rethink and pull back. Who knows.

Unfortunately the things he has been part of, a la Out of Sand and Can’t Deny Me have sucked. If that’s the pinnacle of what he can create right now, I’d rather not have them make an album.

I think it’s more disappointing that the rest of the band seems to be chomping at the bit to do something. It’d be really cool if they could just do another collaboration with Neil while they wait for Ed.

After seeing how much fun they were having live I had really hoped TOTD would make another album.

Maybe they could do a TOTD album with EV on vocals as a tribute to Cornell

Yeah, i wanted a TOTD album too. That tour seemed so good for those guys. Im glad they did it.

outside of our own desire to hear new music (since we all so loved BS and LB, i can see why we're in so much anticipation), i don't really see how we can fault a dude for his current career choices. if EV was an unknown dude and landed a bunch of success in the stock market and decided to coast through life for a decade, who would fault him? what's the difference?

Sure, but looking at it in those terms is a bummer; we are following an artist, not an equity trader, and we want to believe that he is artistically driven and engaged. A full decade of a few scant, sub-par releases is a tough pill to swallow, even if it makes practical sense

I have nothing but respect for the guy, and i understand if he is in a different place in life. Its just shocking he seems to be retired of making music. He is still a live force, damn the show i saw last year was incredible, but he is not releasing any kind of music. Not with PJ, not solo, not in a new project.

Maybe he realized he's out of ideas so why subject his audience to Future Days Part 2. Maybe he thinks the last couple albums suck. He's a hero if that's the case.

I think they genuinely expected (and wanted) to see a resurgence in 2006, and took the return to form idea seriously. Ed said in a couple of interviews that he felt their time was coming around again. When relevance didn’t recur, they aimed at poppier writing, rehired their old hitmaker producer, and let him have more control over what they did. It couldn’t hurt...after all, he had had a big hand in Springsteen’s return to form with The Rising etc.

That didn’t do what they wanted it to do either, and I feel like Lightning Bolt has the sound of a band at a loss as to what their fans want from them. Here’s an old school riff-rocker. A power ballad. A loop-driven experiment. A big pop chorus. Want some punk rock? An atmospheric rhythm piece? A bar band song with swagger? No? Uh...folky singer-songwriter fare? Hello? It sounds like Pearl Jam! Hello?

Basically, I feel like every post-Riot Act album sounds a little less driven by creative desire than the one before it, and a little more like an attempt to guess what the hell it is you want them to be.

Which is not a great motivator for getting into the studio.

It is interesting because I feel like the decline in output had initially mirrored the state of the world. In the Clinton years, the band and the tone of the music battled with personal demons and perhaps broke through near the end with Yield. The second stanza to me, Binaural through self-titled, looked more outward to battle the times, particularly as Clinton failed to live up to the progressive promise and Bush won the 2000 election and the aftermath of that. Seemed the band was driven to push back against the tide of the outside world.

Then, Obama won the 2008 election and it seemed with no personal or political demons to excise, the band lost focus and became content with their station. The current state of the world would, in this theory, reignite some level of purpose to rattle the cage (Jeff Ament seems on board with this given the Missoula poster). Maybe this is what’s coming? I am at least hopeful.

I guess it's possible that Eddie specifically is far more aware of the criticisms of their last two records than we realize, and is afraid he cant do better than that anymore.
