Southestern & Something More Than Free are as good as any Ryan Adams album.

Yea I missed those. Thanks.durdencommatyler wrote:He did, though. It seems he's walking a lot of it back now. But his first reaction was a categorical denial.Strat wrote:He's not categorically denying it at all.
Adams’ lawyer said the singer denied all of the “extremely serious and outlandish accusations” from the “disgruntled individuals.”Both of those from Rolling Stone. On Wednesday, prior to the publication of the article, Adams posted a since-deleted image of the New York Times’ logo with the caption, “Fuck you. You are kitty litter. Happy Valentine’s Day.” He also replied to one tweet before the story’s publication, “Run your smear piece. But the leagel [sic] eagles see you. Rats. I’m fucking taking you down.”
The magazine also acknowledges that he's walked it back since:But he absolutely came out and denied all of it at the jump.A rep for Adams did not immediately reply to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment, though the musician’s tone shifted from defiant to apologetic in statements throughout the day.
But again, this is moving quickly, and it's upsetting. In the end it doesn't really matter. But knowing how it all played out is important, especially given someone who as you say has a history of being manic.

Hasn't Jason Isbell acted like a drunk buffoon though? We can play this game all day with musical acts.

Also Isbell is 7 or 8 years sober, very happily married, and has a kid. If he had issues in the past, they are long over. But I'm guessing those issues were just related to being an alcoholic not promising women fame and fortune in the music business to fuck them.verb_to_trust wrote:Hasn't Jason Isbell acted like a drunk buffoon though? I'm not trying to put the transgressions on the same level. It's a tough game trying to invest in an artist on a level that goes deeper than just the music, that's all.

I don't think I'll ever stop being at least a little surprised by stuff like this. Conceptually I don't have a hard time imagining Ryan Adams being generally a creep, but anytime I read these kinds of details it just adds a creepy element of reality to it that my brain isn't quite prepared for. I barely listen to his music anymore anyway so I don't really feel that same moral dilemma about how much I can continue listening to him -- certainly hearing any of it in the near future will make me feel pretty icky -- but I definitely feel for those who admire him as a musician and an artist (even before this I can't imagine there were a lot of people who admired him as a person, but if they did, I feel for them too), and certainly for those who were on the receiving end of his behavior.Birds in Hell wrote:Yeah, my reaction exactly.bodysnatcher wrote:same, not surprised whatsoeverRangi Guy wrote:I couldn't name you one Ryan Adams song....I'm not even sure if I've heard his music before, but if someone were to have asked me if he was kind of a creep and into underage girls, I would have said 'Totally!' - I'm surprised people are shocked by this

70s/80s? How about Eddie Vedder? You don't think Ed has ever been a rich drunk asshole rock star, especially in the 90's?JuanHamm wrote:How about any rock band from the 70s/80s?verb_to_trust wrote:Hasn't Jason Isbell acted like a drunk buffoon though? The timing of the article seems like it was intended to derail his big plans for the year.

What I will say about the article is that the Mandy Moore stuff didn't really fit. Ryan said she wasn't a real musician and now she's finally free to make music again? They've been divorced for like 5 years and she is a famous actress. She can make music if she wants to.

I think she is in it because he was a controlling asshole to her. But yah, of course she's not 13 and a nobody.verb_to_trust wrote:What I will say about the article is that the Mandy Moore stuff didn't really fit. Laura GETS it.Laura Burhenn wrote:The lasting trope of the Rock-N-Roll singer has led to some ugly conditioning of boys, turning sensitive young poets into monstrous sexual predators. The #metoo movement never reached the fever pitch in the music world it could’ve because most victims I know personally aren’t interested in having that storyline define their careers. They’re also not interested in pleading their case to an industry that has proven over and over it will take the side of whichever musician brings the biggest ROI. (There are exceptions to this, and I applaud the women and men in positions of power doing the heavy lifting here.)
I’m mostly excited to be working on something that will counter this — that will dismantle the outdated, patriarchal, sexist systems, building up something new that makes room for a true diversity of voices where EVERYONE has safe space to grow and succeed. There really is room for everyone...
This sucks on so many levels. But I'm so glad we can recognize this and that there are others working toward something much more positive.
