Burt is basically the N&D equivalent of graffiti: less interested in communicating and defending an actual position than in being loud and attentioned, generally fun to look at, and skewed enough in his worldview to look at a nakedly disingenuous effort to say “sure we argued that the ban on sex discrimination in the Civil Rights Act does not protect workers on the basis of their sexual orientation, tried to ruin the careers of every transgendered person in the military, and made one of the most aggressive anti-gay rights politickers the international religious freedoms ambassador, but we super mean it when we get upset at Iran (who we totally aren’t looking for an excuse to fight) and their treatment of those gross gays ignore that last part” and go “heh, yeah, stoopid libs.”

I enjoy his posts, but don’t consider them to be a part of any real conversation. I don’t mean that to sound dismissive or rude, I just don’t see that he tries to contribute anything.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), the leader of the main congressional delegation, pressed Shanahan on whether he was telling European officials in Munich that the full U.S. withdrawal from Syria was a done deal.

“Are you telling our allies that we are going to go to zero by April 30?” he asked Shanahan, according to Graham.

“Yes, that’s been our direction [from the president],” Shanahan replied.

“That’s the dumbest f---ing idea I’ve ever heard,” Graham responded.

Graham then launched into a list of consequences he feared would result from a precipitous U.S. withdrawal from Syria without a follow-up plan: The Islamic State would return, Turkey would attack Kurdish forces, Iran would gain the advantage. Graham asked Shanahan if he disagreed with that analysis.

“That could very well happen,” Shanahan said.

“Well, if the policy is going to be that we are leaving by April 30, I am now your adversary, not your friend,” Graham told the acting Pentagon chief, according to Graham. (Several other lawmakers confirmed this exchange.)

The case has been made that we basically already have the Mueller report--that the indictments he's been making along the way are the indictments that will happen, that he won't connect any dots that he can't prove and that Congress will have to decide if they want to take any further political steps.
