From the time I first fell in love with Pearl Jam almost 30 years ago now, I’ve never felt like they owe me anything other than what they want to do. I’m just along for the ride, and anytime I want off, I’ll do that. I’m not the show-collecting, realtime setlist-following superfan I was 15 years ago, but I still enjoy their music and always look forward to what will come next. It used to be fun on the lead up to an album because most of us on these non-official forums were like-minded so the excitement over any snippet of news was fun to share and experience. But threads like this, and the level of entitlement of “fans” here who in the same breath say the band has sucked for the last 15 years yet expect a new album that’s going to erase all that is really kind of weird. To the point where you feel like an outsider for liking the band we all came here to talk about.

I basically agree with this, except I don’t feel like an outsider for liking PJ. And it doesn’t really bother me if other people want to constantly rip them either. I’m surprised people are so invested sometimes. Anyway, I will always love the band that gave us Ten-Riot Act, and I’ll never apologize for that. That is my favorite band of all time. The band that gave us Backspacer and LB is just a shodow of what it once was - creatively speaking. And in my opinion the live shows aren’t what they once were either (although I think they managed to sustain their high level of live performance longer than they sustained it in the studio). I’ll always be excited for a new album even if I don’t expect much out of new pj music anymore. And I’ll always hold on to a shred of hope that they find a creative groove that somehow produces another great album, even if that seems far fetched.

It IS odd. I've somehow managed to internalize it over the last 6 years to the point of almost numbness. I'm more than happy to shit on them for things that are actually creatively bankrupt but the dominant narrative presented by this board about PRAMG and all that horseshit is still wrong and it's been perpetuated for far too long to the point where it SEEMS like fact. I mostly try to ignore it and pay more attention to people who I think are on the up and up like strat, durden, etc.

My taste for their music extends a little further than most of the off-wagon RMers -- I was pretty intensely excited about all things Pearl Jam until around 2011-12, which is when the shows started really going south for me and the emphasis on nostalgia and branding really seemed to consume the contemporaneous narrative being told by their music. I can definitely see a clean break in ideology, approach, etc. that seemed to land somewhere in that extended break between 2003 and 2006, but personally speaking, there was no point between my initial wave of excitement for PJ (summer '95) and that 2011-12 cutoff that felt like a black hole or an unnatural detour or anything that otherwise derailed my general enthusiasm for the band. Even as the albums rose and fell in my rankings (and they shuffled around quite a bit during that 15-year period), the band always felt like they were at least doing something that felt vital to them, and that gave their career a sense of forward motion that was always a lot of fun to follow along with.

I'm not crossing my fingers for new Pearl Jam music at this point, but I will always treasure those fifteen years, and have lots from that time that I can still revisit with great pleasure when the spirit moves me. That said, RM has discussed virtually everything there is to discuss about Pearl Jam a thousand times over. It's not surprising that, as the band fails to generate worthwhile new subject matter, conversation on the forum spirals further into absurdity and silliness.
