My point is If yield wasn’t released until 5 years after no code we’d have lost our shit about the direction of no code.
The longer the gaps the more scrutiny and the more expectations are piled onto the next project.
If foo fighters released an album every 5 years they’d be laughed at.
In saying that faith no more had a long gap between their last album and sol Invictus and that album is amazing.

I dunno. I've been listening to FNM fanatically since 1989 when The Real Thing blew my socks off. While Sol Invictus was well reviewed when it was released, I think that's more of an indictment on the current state of music today. It ranks as the worst Patton era FNM album for me.

It IS odd. I've somehow managed to internalize it over the last 6 years to the point of almost numbness. I'm more than happy to shit on them for things that are actually creatively bankrupt but the dominant narrative presented by this board about PRAMG and all that horseshit is still wrong and it's been perpetuated for far too long to the point where it SEEMS like fact. I mostly try to ignore it and pay more attention to people who I think are on the up and up like strat, durden, etc.
I agree with this. There is an intellectual rot happening right here on this board. I see some projection happening, calling out others (the band) for being creatively bankrupt (which I don't agree with), while bringing abso-fucking-no new fresh thoughts here themselves. One of the (many) reasons I love Backspacer is because it pisses off exactly the right people who need to be annoyed by it. So, oftentimes it is strangely satisfying to me to come on here every so often and read this board.
If the band is in a 'let's scrap this and start anew' stage, I'd want that for certain chunks of the fanbase.

That seems to be the general consensus. Left me cold, though. I've tried returning to it a few times since, hoping it'd have grown on me, but nah. Superhero is great. Matador is really good. Sunny Side Up is terrific. But there's lots of throwaway, b-side standard crap on there (IMO). I saw them play at the Roundhouse on the Sol Invictus tour, and the material was only marginally better live.
I love how people get all defensive and up-in-arms as though we *want* to hate PJ's new music.
Maybe we hate it because it's generic and boring? Almost every band gets to that point anyway. Whether or not it "brings in new fans" depends on the band. Pearl Jam has never been known for their amazing creativity by the public at large, so it's no surprise that their fan base is getting bigger and younger, while their music gets dumber and easier to digest. That's the way things are these days and they are only trying to keep up with the times. If I sound like a boring old fart, then so be it.
I feel the same way about the Foo Fighters. Their music is beyond generic and boring to me, and I don't know a single person who likes their music at all, but they clearly have a fan base out there. Who those people are, I don't know, and I'm not sure if I want to know. My guess is that they are the same people who go to Nickleback shows because it's "something to do".
This is only my personal opinion, and it only pertains to the quality of the music itself.

Oh live is even better yeah. But that happens with every FNM album. I cant listen to anything on The Real Thing and live those songs are so fuuucking good.

Fair enough, but my next question would be is Pearl Jam the only band that you don't really like anymore yet continue talking about/engaging with and hoping for something different after so long? I guess that's the weird part...if I didn't like any band anymore I'm kinda done with following their every move and having discussions about their music (that I no longer like anyway). Seems like a huge waste of time/energy, especially for a band that's been around as long as PJ.
It’s my all time favorite band, No Code my favorite album. The most annoying thing on the internet are people who view Ed as a God, someone beyond any criticism.

This is always a bit of an odd conversation to me, because it really only pertains to music. No one would ever be surprised if someone continued to see and even talk about the movies from the director who had done a number of their favorite films, even if they disliked the director's recent output.

Also, embarrassed is the wrong word. I’ve never been embarrassed by any band, they don’t represent me. Let’s say that Backspacer was the first PJ album I thought sucked and LB ain’t much better.

I don't think there's anyone here who likes the band's older output any less even though they've been disappointed in the band's recent material, almost everyone here is still a Pearl Jam fan in some respect (even if their fandom is strictly historical).
It's also the nature of the board having existed for a long time; people have developed friendships and camaraderie with other RM posters (and the Pearl Jam discussion is only one aspect of this place, perhaps not even the dominant aspect) and so it doesn't seem unusual to me that they'd continue to hang around, even once the initial reason they came here has fallen away.
