Brother is a silly song, and I went in expecting nothing, but that was a shockingly good version.

I really like Brother but SOH from the 2000 tour is amazing. All that Sonic Youth influence...

Eddie sounds so good. It's a shame this performance was wasted on this song.

sleight of hand is a show stopper in the worst sense of the word, and has been all the times i've seen it. Granted I'm not a big booster of the song to begin with, but it's atmosphere is hard to replicate live and its pacing, while appropriate for a record, just grinds live momentum to a halt. So this is a (to me) surprisingly good live version, but I'm still blown away by that Brother

I saw you log on, and thought 'man, PhatJ would love this version of brother but it's up against SoH. He won't even listen'

You are probably right. But since you said that I’ll give it a listen in a bit.

I listened. What did you specifically think I’d love about Brother?

Aren't we supposed to judge each of these matchups by the individual live performances, not how they fit into a setlist?

This may be one of the easiest matches thus far, and the vote's for Sleight of Hand. I don't know if they ever replicated the feel of the studio version, but in 2000 they came close many times, including in this performance. The song has emotional heft, the excitement of them pushing against the walls of their prior sound and a hell of a performance. Brother, it's....I don't know, it's just there. It's not a terrible song, but I forget it the second it's over. It's not hard to see why they left it off Ten.

Those of you who voted for brother should be ashamed of yourselves.

I actually really love this performance of "Brother," Eddie's singing during the bridge especially -- a good example of a great performance elevating a relatively average song. But it's no Chicago 2000 "Sleight of Hand."

that's what I'm doing. After my meta commentary about the song I pointed out that this performance exceeded my usual expectations

I lack encyclopedic knowledge of the performances of this ear, but I think it's maybe the best post 2005 Eddie performance I can think of. It's a shame it's on this nothing song.

It's definitely among my favorites from this 2009-2010 era, which was shaky overall but wasn't without its share of stellar individual performances.
