David Foster Wallace is a wordy guy so it makes sense that it's talkative.BootsToAsses wrote:The End Of The Tour (2015)

I'm only 30 mins in, and it's basically just the two of them talking in every scene. There's been two R.E.M. songs so far, though

Free Solo - was expecting a prequel/sequel to Solo - instead got some crazy MF with aspergers who has a death wish causing me to white-knuckle the sofa throughout most of the doco. Excellent watch!!
Instant Family - kind of a touching story which had my wife in tears a few times and then talking about how she'd love to foster some kids. I'm not having a bar of it!

Re: What movies are you watching?
Watched How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World today. Took my son to see it when he was 5 and he absolutely fell in love with it. We read all of the books that were available to him and then he started reading them himself. He's just been an absolute fan of the series and we were all looking forward to how they end the movie since the books were wildly different.
It was a great movie. The only real complaints I had with the movie is that the animators went a little too overboard with the movement sometimes where people looked like a PS2 rag doll animation randomly, just start moving kind of spastically. But that's kind of a Dreamworks hallmark anyway.

Greta is terrifying and I suspect it will age into a classic. Huppert is such a god tier actor.

Re: What movies are you watching?
I hadn't heard of this movie until this morning. My wife and I were seeing what is playing at Alamo tomorrow and Greta was listed. I shrugged it off until she mentioned that Neil Jordan directed it. And we bought tickets.VinylGuy wrote:dying to see itLoathedVermin72 wrote:Greta is terrifying and I suspect it will age into a classic. Huppert is such a god tier actor.
I know nothing else about it. But I'm SUPER pumped for it.

I goddamn love Neil Jordan so fucking much. I'm more excited for this movie that I know nothing about than I have been for anything in long time.

It was fine.VinylGuy wrote:Full report joe please.
Overall, I'm fairly disappointed. Not a terrible film but certainly nothing extraordinary or inspired. It's often trite and obvious which deflates all the tension. It lacks Jordan's romanticism, which is the thing I love most about his work. The writing never gives the characters a chance to breathe. We get told how we're supposed to think/feel a lot, but we're never afforded the time or space to actually feel those things.
Perhaps it's a love letter to classic thriller cinema. Which is great but this homage doesn't totally work. It never goes deep enough. Never surprises or excites. You've seen this movie before. And if you're going to ape the masters, you have to bring something exciting to the table -- some commentary or spark or fresh insight -- but that never happens. It lacks the power and grip of say Hitchcock's mastery of suspense.
The performances also mostly uninspired. Huppert is super interesting. She's doing all the heavy lifting. Chloe is sooooo uninteresting. I feel like she's constantly choosing projects that should be better than they are. I just don't like her work in general and here especially. Rea is fun but kind of wasted.
Still, there are some crazy scenes and one or two sort of fun plays on genre expectations, but nothing that dives below the surface. I wanted it to be better.
