Do you guys honestly think even the 10 Club would be so blatantly inept at PR that they'd openly state "only bad fans would want to take food from the mouths of their children"?

I think I notice something missing in an mp3 a lot quicker if it's a live recording, whether it's official or audience recording.

But for albums, I'll admit that the difference isn't always apparent at first, but if I'm listening intently on decent equipment, I'll begin to notice something is missing. Last summer I wanted to listen to Hello Nasty and found a CD I had burned a while back. I remember driving to the beach about an hour away listening to it very loud, and by halfway through the album it was really bothering me how flat it sounded. Now, this is an album I am intimately familiar with, so slight loss of sonic nuance is going to stick out to me, especially if I'm listening to it loudly in the car when I'm by myself. It's so hard to really describe what's missing. It's like there's a dimension missing or something. Or like you're looking at a picture and the color pallet has been decreased. It might not be apparent right away, but you'll notice something isn't right if it's a nice big high resolution version you're looking at. And a lot of the times it's not even something you can pinpoint as missing, but you notice the sound doesn't hit you the way you're used to. That's especially true with an album like that where I'm intimately familiar with it. I'll be listening loudly and I'm not getting the same visceral reaction to certain parts that I know always hit me. In fact, that was what happened the first time I really noticed a difference. 10 years ago I couldn't tell a lick of difference between high quality mp3s and lossless files. Then one night I came home and was coming down from an acid trip, and decided to put on my headphones and listen to Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here album. I know the drugs were definitely heightening my awareness of it, but I remember being so disappointed with how flat all the songs sounded, when they were supposed to sound so rich and full. That's when I started rebuilding my music collection to have lossless copies of everything.
I like the way Steve Hoffman (a mastering engineer known for audiophile remasters) described the loss of resolution between 24bit and 16bit. The reverb tail gets shorter because 16bit isn't enough resolution to render it all. This makes it sound less natural. I think something similar happens with mp3s. They sound sort of metallic to me. I suspect with music mastered like Avocado the difference wouldn't be very obvious though.

You mean, the same organization that reportedly called people at home to discuss things they wrote on a message board? Yes, I absolutely think they would be that blatantly inept at PR.

This sounds so bizarre, that it may have been true.

Goddammit, that's amazing. I'm so glad I've never been a member. I think they've completely lost the plot in the last few years, not just the administrators but the members/forum users too.

Then again, are we all really sane here?

I think there's something seriously wrong with me because I just can't quit my analog membership. But it does nothing for me. I didn't even get tickets to the ONE show I wanted to attend this tour. And I never listen to the 45s they send me. But I... I just have to have them. I just... I have to.

B alerted me to a backend issue on our site today and it promted me to check out this forum. And wow that hatred for the dot net is palpable here. Seems some folks take issue with how we do some things on gremmie.net, e.g. categorizing rough mixes and alternate takes into the "demos" category, repurposing fan recording like Wrigley into an easy to download zip file, chastizing the audio quality of some of the older bootlegs. Three things in response:

1. The dot net is imperfect. It has taken a massive amount of work to compile and categorize the site as it currently stands. The site is intuitive, and at times imprecise. For example, we categorize rough mixes and alt takes in with demos because its easier for most people to just go to one location instead of three (demos versus demos, alternate takes, and rough mixes) for basically the same thing. I would have thought this was fairly obvious, but I've been wrong before - just ask your Mom.

2. I have a busy life. Like many of you guys, I have a job, spouse, friends, S&M parties, etc. While the dot net is incredibly important to me, and I think it shows, I find myself with less and less time to put into it as the years go by. This works nicely with Pearl Jam's slowing output because it allows me to keep up at a pace consistent with my own life. If the band suddenly went back to releasing b-sides and bootlegs all the time, I wouldn't be able to keep up.

3. Start your own website. Seriously, there's nothing worse than someone who complains about something, but doesn't have the balls to either fix it themselves or make an effort to reach out to someone who can. Got a problem with the audio quality of our MSG 98 bootleg? Send us a better one. Dislike the way we categorize our files? Send us your thoughts on how we should do it better. I mean it, gremmies send us ideas and new Pearl Jam pretty frequently. If it's doable, you can trust we'll make it happen.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post. I hope it helps to put things into perspective.

I've used your site for years, and have always found it to be a valuable free resource. Before it was around (and when the internet was shitty - late 90's), I had to scour the local markets for music stalls selling bootlegs and rarity cds of PJ - and when I found them, they weren't cheap.

You can't please everyone, and there is always someone that just likes to have a whinge about something for the sake of it, but don't have the dingleberries themselves to do anything better.

Keep up the good work, I appreciate it. Thanks for taking the time to post too, you should stick around. :nice:
