Oddly enough, I thought I could hear strings in the soundcheck song too.
Could have as easily been a keyboard making strings effects but it does sound like strings.

Could it be the track with the rumoured Incubus girlfriend on violin? I wonder because I hear a violin on the bridge.

I hear this too. But as I said somewhere else, if they had a string player for soundcheck they would have played something with strings at the show. I believe that this was a playback of the studio track in an empty theatre.

It sounded too ambient to me to be a studio recording, but that could be because of the low quality of the sound clip

That's no "siren" at the beginning, to my ears, it's a delayed electric guitar.

I still don't hear the strings or keys, just Mike playing some pretty effected lead guitar.

The way you can hear Matt's snare and cymbals ring out, I'm certain it's being performed live, not a playback.

No it's definitely being played live. You can hear the drums splashing back off the walls/roof.
