What he describes in that clip is how doctors and families address a painful and hopeless decision every day in this country, and it really fucking sucks to watch it misrepresented for political gain.

It sucks, but that's politics, right? When addressing the people you've got to keep your message clear and simple. Trying to be too nuanced will get your words taken out of context.

2. This is a 21st-century version of a particular type of “mocking feigned sincerity” political messaging that used to get used more often. Early Limbaugh was a fan of it during the Clinton years. It fell out of favor because research showed that it pretty consistently enhanced exposure to and appreciation for the original message. It backfires. People laugh and go “ok, that’s pretty funny,” but the thing is....they heard the words.

It has worked better on the internet, because it generally only reaches the people who are already in its bubble. Public messaging research continues to find that the more exposure it gets outside that bubble, the more it backfires.

3. Biden’s apology was well crafted as an early messaging effort, but was kind of narrow and light. I assume he has more to say at upcoming appearances, but if this is his entire reaction it’s...not all that great. Trump’s childish mockery can only serve to make it look more mature, earnest, and reflective than it actually is.
