Binaural recording technique
Hi all,
My audio production professor recently learned that Pearl Jam recorded an album using Binaural techniques and wanted to know if there were any good articles, videos, etc. about that particular recording process/session. Is there?

Lou Reed was a binaural freak and recorded a few albums with that technique in the 70's, including a humorous live album called "Take No Prisoners" which was frequent listening in many touring vans that I've been in.

Actually, he said he read my guided tour and asked if i wanted to come talk to the class about it. It's tough because while I would love to actually spend 80 minutes talking about Binaural (a lesser pearl jam album but no one is asking me to come lecture about Ten) he's mostly interested in production details and processes I know fuck all about.Monkey_Driven wrote:Did you tell them it is your favorite PJ album?stip wrote:Hi all,

Re: Binaural recording technique
I couldn't find anything specific to Binaural, but there are plenty of online articles about Tchad Blake's recording processes. He uses a mixture of a binaural dummy head and separately close mic'd instruments.stip wrote:Actually, he said he read my guided tour and asked if i wanted to come talk to the class about it. It was a pretty dumb album name, particularly as they dropped the concept and junked most of the binaurally-mixed tracks anyway.

Re: Binaural recording technique
You have to think, could this album be made today? Could a "dummy" head be used? That's pretty insensitive. One thing is for sure, they wouldn't get the growling dog at the beginning of Rival past the PETA activists of today.

Re: Binaural recording technique
The funny thing about that album is that it didn't matter at all how the tracks were mixed and what tracks they included and what order they were in, because they were all good, well-produced songs. They probably bitched and moaned and stressed out over it and alienated people for no fucking reason.

Re: Binaural recording technique
I'm not sure there's another album I've yet heard in my years on this earth that has altered more favorably in my estimation over time than Binaural.
From first ever listen to most recent listen, that fucker has moved mountains in my head.
