I honestly think Madonna's career turned into a joke. She did some great stuff back in the 90s and then she just got old and didnt know what to do with it.

Madonna had over 20 years (True Blue to Confessions on a Dance Floor) of pop relevancy.

That’s a pretty great streak.

Okay... so...

I haven't listened to Poe's 'Haunted' in a while...

Holy shit! I'd forgotten how fucking fantastic that record is. It's a literal masterpiece. It is perfectly executed. It's sublime. It's absolutely one of the greatest albums I've ever heard and I can't believe more people don't know it.

I loved Poe when I was in high school. I forgot about her. Always preferred her first album, though.

Her first album is stellar. No doubt.

Listening to Haunted again though I'm blown away by how perfect it is in content, execution, and theme. It's really marvelous. It's a perfect concept album.

Recording artist. Only released 2 albums before getting FUCKED by the industry and kind of disappearing. Her second album, Haunted, is a sort of companion piece to her brother's book. House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski (one of the most phenomenal books I've ever read).

Basically, their father passed away, leaving behind a ton of lectures on tape. Poe channeled all of that into an album called Haunted. Her brother channeled it into a book called House of Leaves. They share themes and ideas but only just.

Her first record, called Hello, was released five years earlier in 1995. It has the hit single "Angry Johnny" on it. Both albums are stellar. But her second work is a masterpiece. It's a concept record that pays infinite dividends. I highly recommend it. It's a perfect piece of art.

Though, since you and I are diametrically opposed in our tastes, you'll probably hate it. So... never mind. Don't listen to it.

I was prepared to bring up the House of Leaves connection but you brought the A-game.
House of Leaves was accompanied by a companion piece (or vice versa), a full-length album called Haunted recorded by Danielewski's sister, Anne Danielewski, known professionally as Poe. The two works cross-pollinated heavily over the course of their creations, each inspiring the other in various ways. Poe's statement on the connection between the two works is that they are parallax views of the same story. House of Leaves references Poe and her songs several times, not only limited to her album Haunted, but Hello as well. One example occurs when the character Karen Green is interviewing various academics on their interpretations of the short film "Exploration #4"; she consults a "Poet," but there is a space between the "Poe" and the "t," suggesting that Poe at one point commented on the book. It may also be a reference to Edgar Allan Poe.

The album Haunted also draws heavily from the novel, featuring tracks called "House of Leaves", "Exploration B" and "5&½ Minute Hallway", and many less obvious references. The video for "Hey Pretty" also features Mark Danielewski reading from House of Leaves (pages 88–89), and in House of Leaves, the band Liberty Bell's lyrics were also songs on Poe's album.
