Been giving Trouble Will Find Me and Boxer some tries

TWFM seems a little tired.. bored/boring for the most part, though there are some great moments on this album

Boxer is growing on me, and it's definitely better than TWFM, but it also has some very questionable/boring moments, but its highs are higher than TWFM's

Sleep Well Beast might be their most inspired record. They have so much energy and passion and the lyrics and music come together so well on almost every track. There are a few tracks I can't get into but for the most part it's a great album, and in my opinion, their best. Many moments on this album give me legitimate chills no matter how many times I hear them. The Raz loves it the most, too.

High Violet is my second favorite. Its highs aren't as high as SWB, but it is such a consistent, well flowing record! There are seldom any moments I don't enjoy, though they are there.
Boxer has grown on me quite a bit because of the live in Brussels album, which I prefer to the studio version.

That's really cool but did it make sense? Their drummer creates a very full sound by himself.

Not uncommon for them to use multiple percussionists. This version of Rylan is great, and has 3 drummers at times:

if you’re familiar with the song rylan, you can tell the difference it makes. I thought it added quite a bit. the normal drummer plays a lot of electronic drums.

For the talk of National albums being 'growers,' I feel like that happens for me so often with them in the course of listening to a song of theirs for the first time. In this first 30 seconds, I was not so sure about this song, and by the time it ended, I'd done a complete 180. It's a great song.

I'm definitely getting the feeling this is like an Achtung Baby/Zooropa thing, where they're using what remained from the last album and just going weirder.

so in the q & a before the nyc show, bryce dessner mentioned that they did have 4-5 songs written already. matt said that they planned to take this year off completely. and then mike mills approached them with the movie idea for which they wrote 6-8 songs, and they just decided to release an entirely new album in coordination with the movie.

Yeah, I feel like this song and You Had Your Soul With You definitely felt like a further development of SWB's sound (the use of synths, mixing electronic drums with what Bryan's doing). Everything sounds great so far (and though I'm not listening to anything from the live shows, lots of people are saying they haven't released any of the best songs yet).
