I’d rather be where you are now and be surprised and delighted on the night than where I am with huge hopes and leaving disappointed with it.
I’m quietly confident JJ is gonna ace this.

TLJ has flaws, and it also has strengths. More than anything it's a gorgeous movie. But its main flaw is in its connection to what has been before.Monkey_Driven wrote:I absolutely LOVE Star Wars and the trailer left me cold. We've seen desert landscapes before. Luke's voiceover was great and hopefully a theme of the film, but Palpatine's laugh just brought it all down. The movie itself could turn out to be fine or great, but my reception to the trailer is likely due to my fatigue for the pre-release hype of these blockbuster movies and the leaks/interviews about its content.Anders wrote:I loved the teaser trailer. It's difficult to talk about in certain terms before seeing the movie. I do however, believe that whatever they do with Palpatine, that it was planned from very beginning. It could very well just be a hologram/video message or some sort. I don't want a force ghost fight either, but doubt we will get it. There was certainly nothing in the teaser to indicate that. Rather Luke tells Rey that's it her fight now.
I won't even get into TLJ, as we probably had opposite views on that movie.
I generally like JJ Abrams' films, but they don't hold the same staying power as the other films in this saga.
TLJ has tons of flaws, but it dares to be different and succeeds in a lot of ways.
It's a nine movie saga that is ending. It has to fit together as one story. If the idea was to just make an ongoing story that never ended, it would perhaps make more sense to move away from the past. But that's not the case here. if this movie doesn't somehow relate to the PT and the OT, it will have failed. Palpatine and the Skywalker name is very much a part of that, even if Skywalker is just used as a new name for the Jedi. The teaser indicates that in this movie they will address that, and that is good.

We could go back and forth about this, but TLJ has all kinds of connections to earlier films in the saga. It tells a new story with those connections still present.Anders wrote:TLJ has flaws, and it also has strengths. More than anything it's a gorgeous movie. Something I’m just now realising is the title alone leaves a massive door open for future trilogies. If she has dropped the Jedi way and dogma and renamed the new way Skywalker that is.

Yes, it is a bit strange to rename the Jedi (or however you want to put it), if this was the end of the SW timeline for ever.

Maybe Kylo and Rey and Palpatine fight creates so much Force energy it destroys the galaxy
Or just destroys the Force and everyone turns to regular people.

The whole idea of flashbacks / flash forwards is unappealing to me in Star Wars, in a storytelling way. I like the linear way from the OT that is constantly pushing the narrative forward, where the audience is in the same "present space" as the characters.
Flashbacks and flash forwards feel like a TV show.

I agree that we could go back and forth. If SW was GOT, then TLJ would be the 8th season out of 9. Not sure it could live up to that.Monkey_Driven wrote:We could go back and forth about this, but TLJ has all kinds of connections to earlier films in the saga. In a way I agreed. In another we have a 30 year long gap with little to no idea about any of its events that took place. Some flashback here to further explain Palps or Luke or Kylo or Snoke or whatever it is, is justified (and can be extrapolated upon later in other ways.)
I don’t even know there will be flashbacks. I’m predicting Rey has a force vision and Palps is in it. The above rumour seems more like a force vision too rather than flashback

I get what you are saying and I agree a lot of people are enjoying how everything is going in the new trilogy. I'm just of the school of thought that I liked how the OT progressed and started "in media res" . I was hoping for a less is more in the ST as well but it looks like they are doing it differently.dimejinky99 wrote:blueviper wrote:The whole idea of flashbacks / flash forwards is unappealing to me in Star Wars, in a storytelling way. I guess what I'm saying is....when the OT came out, that was basically the universe. Three films. Now, forty years later, there is so much expanded universe stuff to fill in gaps and create new associations that (to me) dilutes the original story line.
But I'll go into TROS as optimistic as I can be.

Adding to the OT and building canon around it isn’t taking away from the OT or diluting it.
I’d agree that it was of the new canon had dropped the ball at any point. It hasn’t. Clone wars rebels all the books and comics and stand-aloneness have added vastly and have all been quality.
You can simply have the OT in a bubble if that suits you. Many do. Nothing wrong with that and no obligation to engage. Even up as far as the prequels or sequel trilogy.
TLDR all this new stuff doesn’t take away from the originals.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
These aren’t albums, they are chapters in one ongoing story. Yes, one chapter can be good, and another bad in a book, but together they both matter to how you feel aboit the book.
However, I love the expanded universe. I love that we have gotten Rogue One, Clone Wars, the Darth Vader comic, etc.

Binaural is amazing. If only we could get a Binaural-quality album for modern PJ.

I would take that happily.
My first time going on tour to see shows and the album itself was and remains such an interesting and weird work.
They wish they could make such a record now.

I like 6 songs on Binaural but I don't think it's amazing.
