If you guys didn't help ridleybradout when he ask for opinions when he made the compilation, then that's on you.

I never said I had any issue with the compilation?
My point was that using the compilation as the sole basis for the tournament makes the error of presuming the performances selected are representative of how competently the band performs those songs generally.

That wasn’t the point. You are missing the point. The point wasn’t “what song does pj generally play better live than the rest”. It was “which of these live songs, previously selected, is the best performance”. You’re splitting hairs about things you weren’t intended to consider for this exercise.Birds in Hell wrote:I never said I had any issue with the compilation?

I'm not wrong, though: it's a "best of ridley's compilation" tournament by that measure, not "best live song".PHATJ wrote:That wasn’t the point. You are missing the point. Look, I don't want to ruin anything for anyone, I was just agreeing with dime that I personally don't find listening to the versions posted to be helpful when voting, particularly since I already have my own views of what songs are better-performed than others.

I agree it’s not a “best live song” tournament at its most pure sense. But that exercise is nearly impossible to handle with a group like this. This is ultimately a “best of the compilation” I suppose, but Ridley did ask for input and took nominations from RM for each one of those selections. Stip was simply using that vetting process as a baseline for this tournament. You probably have spent more time with live PJ than almost anyone else in the world. You have an encyclopedic knowledge of hundreds of shows. That’s unique even within a board full of (at one time) hardcore PJ fans. I agree the name of the tournament is clumsy, but the intent was clearly talked about before the tournament started (and several times after it started). I have been using the clips because that’s the point. If we all listen to the same cuts we can debate which performance is the best of the group. When people like you and dime just do your own thing (which is fine, do what you want) it basically defeats the purpose and makes Stips efforts to put this all together somewhat pointless.Birds in Hell wrote:I'm not wrong, though: it's a "best of ridley's compilation" tournament by that measure, not "best live song".PHATJ wrote:That wasn’t the point. I don't think that's remotely true - I've enjoyed this so far and it seems like others have too.PHATJ wrote:When people like you and dime just do your own thing (which is fine, do what you want) it basically defeats the purpose and makes Stips efforts to put this all together somewhat pointless.
I was attempting to explain why I thought the framing and format of the tournament was inconsistent with what I perceived to be its overall aim. I'm not suggesting it's a waste of time, or sucks, or anything else you might've read into that.

It's been pretty clear to me all along what this was about

To be clear the very first thing I said was me voting on it or having an opinion defeats the purpose as I don’t even listen to the videos.

All or None. I like the studio take and this particular live take better than FON.
