1. He will absolutely never finish this series. I give about 50/50 that he finishes and publishes Winds of Winter, though.

2. If anything, I think the opposite is true, dime. D&D met with Martin and hashed out the ending a while back. I think if anything, D&D are changing things on purpose so that the books' endings will be different and "unspoiled." But that's obviously just my own conjecture.

I really REALLY hope I'm wrong... but I don't think there's any chance it comes out this year.

It seems like the conventional wisdom right now is that tonight's episode will end in some kind of defeat and retreat for the living, that it will take a couple more weeks to end the White Walker threat (whether through defeating them or driving them back north). The reasoning everyone inevitably gives is that this isn't how GOT operates, that it revels in pulling the rug out from under viewers and that there are no "happy endings." This has become so accepted that I think the truly shocking ending to the Battle of Winterfell would be a clear victory for the living. It doesn't have to be happy for them to win: thousands upon thousands will obviously die; many of the innocents in the crypts will almost certainly be slaughtered; lovers and siblings and best friends will never see each other again (peace out, Grey Worm); and the prospect of going south to defeat Cersei's forces will seem impossible in the face of these losses. But my bold prediction for tonight is that Episode 3 will be remembered as one of the true climaxes for the series, and that when the credits roll we will never have to worry about the Night King again.

I agree with you post but oddly enough, a full victory for the living is the thing I expect the most. I'll actually be surprised if it isn't. Like I said before, I truly think the only "surprise" would be a wet fart of a battle. No one dies at all.

But, are the creators even interested in "shocks" anymore. There hasn't been a real shocking moment since it went off book. I don't think that's the primary focus anymore. The focus is (and should be) on wrapping up the story and concluding the journey. The shocks don't matter anymore.
