My wife and I attended the Wrigley show, and a couple in front of us had just gotten engaged that day. The bride to be had never been to a PJ show, and he had seen a couple of shows only. They start this song, and it's like an instant snuggle fest between these two. They're hugging and swaying, staring into each other's eyes, etc... It very immediately affected them. I'm not saying it has anything to do with the quality of the song, it's just as expected for them in that situation. My wife turns to me, and says "ugghhh... that's like going to be "their song" forever now".
Her first reaction was, "OK song, kinda lovey-dovey cheesy, but whatever". I drag her to PJ shows, she likes going, but is not long-term addicted like i am. My reaction was complete boredom. Still is, really...
However, a couple weeks ago, I had just got the audience recording of the whole show burned to a CD, and we were playing it in the car on a drive with our toddler asleep in the car seat in the back. I turn and look to her, and she is bawling, crying.... I'm like "really, I didn't think you like this song"..... She starts to tell me about how much it was making her think of our son, and how special he is, and how much she loves him. She wants the song set to a montage of pictures of him growing into a toddler.
Now, I see this artwork today, and I think she's on to something. This is more than just a love song, goofball shit. Could actually have some depth, and represent not just just future days between two lovers, but future days well after the lovers are gone, their children living on, having a lasting impact on the people that we love. The talking genitals with the heart centered, kind of represents children and our love for them, doesn't it? The lyric, "We may die, but they still live on", a pretty obvious reference to children...
So, anyway, ultimately, my point is this - This song comes across bland and cheesy. Played live, it didn't really impress at all. However, if you are settled down in life and think about the world through your children's eyes, this song could connect, and with a little polish, could be a gorgeous song on the record. The artwork seems to support that, imo

Yeah I think that is pretty spot on but the artwork also lends itself to "We are all children Of The Earth." Our Future Days depend on our realisation of this.

I hate to say it (because it sounds a bit try-hard even for me) but the artwork supports the alternate theme of the song we were talking about early on in the thread; that this song is more than a cute little song from Ed to his wife. I'm hoping that the LB artwork suggests more than love song as well.

even if the lyrics have multiple layers, at the heart of this song its still ed writing a love song to his wife.harmless wrote:I hate to say it (because it sounds a bit try-hard even for me) but the artwork supports the alternate theme of the song we were talking about early on in the thread; that this song is more than a cute little song from Ed to his wife. Re: New Song: Future Days
Well sure, it's that; but it might validly be those other things as well. I don't mind if it's a love song, but the layers / alternate readings are what will make it interesting. And I think there's good reason to believe that Ed meant those other meanings to be there, even if they're secondary. I won't bore you with the details as it's all here somewhere already. The Cure were good at writing "love songs" which were more.warehouse wrote:even if the lyrics have multiple layers, at the heart of this song its still ed writing a love song to his wife.harmless wrote:I hate to say it (because it sounds a bit try-hard even for me) but the artwork supports the alternate theme of the song we were talking about early on in the thread; that this song is more than a cute little song from Ed to his wife. I really wanna see how the studio version of this sounds. It looks like they're all (except for Matt) playing at least something most of the time but I can't really hear it. The only part in which Stone is pretty loud (I think its Stone) is when he plays the vocal melody. Too bad I don't really like the vocal melody of the verses, would be better if he played something different. I hope there are more instruments than Brendans stupid Piano for the intro.
The bridge is pretty nice. That should have been longer.

Exactly, the song could be much more layered in studio. Remember, we've only heard this song recorded in a live setting with probably not the greatest equipment (microphone). I swear I think I hear some of sliding guitar in thereMike wrote:I really wanna see how the studio version of this sounds. Yeah, you can see Stone play Slide Guitar in the verses. (At least I think that's what he is doing. He is wearing this metal thing on his finger.) Mike is playing something on the acoustic guitar.bodysnatcher wrote:Exactly, the song could be much more layered in studio. Yeah, I'm pretty sure Mike plays slide guitar in there. That could be one of the saving graces of the song.bodysnatcher wrote:Exactly, the song could be much more layered in studio.
