Elvie, I know it might be taboo to address you with a question when my quote is your signature, and I'm sure you've talked about him before but I don't want to search that hard... what do you think of David Lynch? If you like him do you have a favorite movie?

I think he’s okay but quite possibly the most overrated director of all time.

His only movie I love is Lost Highway.

How is he overrated? Do other directors do what he does better and before him? Do you like Twin Peaks?

He’s overrated because people talk about him as if he’s some unassailable god who originated and owns cinematic weirdness, which of course is nonsense. And, frankly, I don’t think his movies are all that great.

No one “does what he does” because he’s an individual and therefore has his own unique approach and perspective. But there are absolutely plenty of other directors who traffic in surrealism, nightmarishness, suburban darkness, droll humor, etc.

I thought the Twin Peaks pilot was great, but the show quickly descended into TV formulae and I lost interest.

Mulholland Dr.

Fuck that’s difficult. I really don’t know. I want to say Hopper but then I think about Stanton in Repo Man and I don’t think I can.

Which directors traffic in surrealism, nightmarishness, suburban darkness, droll humor, etc., well? Which is your favorite?

Also Sam Fuller. Lynch owes a lot to Sam Fuller.

But, if something tastes good to me, isn't it good? Isn't taste relative/subjective? Use food as an analogy, nobody can enjoy dog poo poo. Nobody. It's objectively bad.

What’s your favorite scene in Lost Highway?

Will you please share few of your thoughts about the Winkie’s Diner scene in Mulholland Drive?
