What’s happened to the internet? People can only find joy in shitting on everything and tearing it apart. People are fuckin hating on this season and benioff and weiss in particular.
What are you gaining by posting a graph showing declining viewer numbers to back up your dissatisfaction with the show? proving what to who?
It’s so pathetic but a worrying toxic never ending shitstorm that just seems to switch focus to whatever is in the eye of the zeitgeist storm. Will this ever end?

Compared to itself and previous seasons, it could be said it isn’t living up to what came before.Mecca wrote:Show set high expectationsdimejinky99 wrote:What’s happened to the internet? But it’s still in an entirely superior strata than final seasons of any amount of other shows.

Re: HBO: Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire)
i mean, that's the thing.* there was never really an issue when all the praise was heaped on the show, some deserved, but also some undeserved. so it shouldn't be a double standard when people criticize the show (again, some deserved and undeserved). it seemed that the majority of the criticism then and now was/is on the story itself. people before (cough * pete * cough) didn't like how far from the books' narrative the show strayed. now, the criticisms involve just how far from the show's previous narrative the show has strayed. i happen to be more pissed at the latter. it's been sloppy and seems to be done solely to pigeonhole the events into the limited amount of episodes left, because that's to what everyone committed. it seems they could've easily solved all of this just by adding a ninth season (although that still wouldn't have satisfied the crowd that hated the story when it detoured from the books in the earlier seasons). i'm still confused why they didn't.

Other than actor contracts has there ever been a reason given for why these past two seasons were shortened? There's certainly enough material here to be two full ten episode seasons.

The guys behind me at work seriously have the worst GOT takes I've ever heard. They are currently talking about how the other eggs at Dragonstone are going to hatch soon and Dany will have at least 2 more dragons.

How much time has passed between the first episode of the series and the most recent?

From the actors perspective it’s really simple. No matter the money there’s fuck all to do in Belfast like at all, and they’re filming way out in the countryside.
Plus the two runners demanded a shorter season cos don’t want to jump the shark and reputation in ruins / hey were making a Star Wars.

Hell, timewise, it’s probably the same anyway. Hasn’t each episode this season been almost an hour and a half?dimejinky99 wrote:Monkey_Driven wrote:Other than actor contracts has there ever been a reason given for why these past two seasons were shortened? It’s been stated like 112 times in this season alone. I can’t keep up with everything on this show, but even I remember that.Simple Torture wrote:They are now trying to figure out who Gendry's father is. With the longer run times this season will roughly be the equivalent of 7.5 episodes.wease wrote:Hell, timewise, it’s probably the same anyway. Re: HBO: Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire)
my point isn't so much the length of the episodes, it's that with so many loose ends to wrap up and so much of the story that they still had to tell. instead of short changing parts of the story that they literally took 5 seasons to develop, they could've done them justice by adding another season. they obviously committed to ending the show after 8 seasons awhile ago before they even had the scripts for the subsequent seasons written. but that was part of the problem.

Re: HBO: Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire)
For me, it's not really the amount of criticism that's changed, but rather the presentation of criticism. There seems to have been a seismic shift toward negativity and gloom. People have a hard time celebrating anything at all anymore (in general) online.
Like this thread, for example. We can (and often do) have more in depth conversations but it's like pulling teeth. Even the people who love the show just come in and immediately start talking about everything they hate about it. It's rare to see those people bother with what (if anything) they like. And maybe that's the problem. Maybe there is nothing left in it for them to like. Then... like, why still watch it? Y'know?
Everywhere online it's just constant "this sucks" "that sucks" "they suck" "suck sucks". And I actually think this thread/conversation is far more positive and constructive than 90% of the the other discussions I see online.
I'm so glad ST turned me on to the Binge Mode pod. That's the level of discourse I've been craving. It's thoughtful, insightful, and thorough. They have a lot of issues with the show and the storytelling, to be sure, but they discuss it in a way that still encourages further exploration and thought rather than just shutting shit down. It's real criticism. It doesn't shut others out by just saying "fucking dumb" and leaving there.
Of course, it's unrealistic to expect everyone on an internet thread to want the same things or even to be capable of having that same level of discussion for every episode of a fucking TV show. Those people (the Binge Mode people and the like) are paid to have those thoughts and to analyse the shit out of things. We aren't.
But I like the way they're able to still enjoy and celebrate a thing even in the midst of real criticism. It feels like (and I'm sure I'm projecting to a degree and I'm not aiming this at anyone here specifically) as a culture, we, the internet, just doesn't care about or have the time for that level of discourse. It's easier to just shit on things. Hate and dismiss and move on to the next snarky burn meme.
So, I feel for what dime is saying. But I also understand that I'm not going to change the internet. I can complain all I want but it is what it is. Ultimately, it's my problem. Just because I don't like it or respond to it doesn't mean it's wrong or that it needs to change. I don't have the right to expect shit to be the way I want it to be.

D&D CLAIMED they had 13 hours of story left to tell and that was it. Because of union contracts they were unable to have one 13 episode season, so they divided it up.Monkey_Driven wrote:Other than actor contracts has there ever been a reason given for why these past two seasons were shortened? Re: HBO: Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire)
i think people are entitled to come in an express their opinions of the show based on the bar that the show itself set, regardless of whether others don't agree with those opinions. far worse for me is when people have posted thoughtful sentiments, only to have others simply respond with a
, which is not only dismissive, but completely sanctimonious (which to me is even worse than the original criticism). i'm certain it's because they don't agree with the opinion or they thought the poster didn't, in their mind, balance that opinion with something that they find positive based on their idea what is good about the show. that's not really fair, and doesn't lead to healthy discourse. neither is the thought that if a person is posting something critical, he or she doesn't still enjoy the show.
most of (read "most," not all of) the criticisms expressed in this thread are to a degree fair. and those that aren't fair are at least backed up by some logic, even if at the end i still don't agree with it. the past couple of seasons have been, by most people's accounts, disappointing relative to the quality of the previous seasons. as i posted, i think the story itself has suffered because of the abbreviated time the showrunners had to work with (which, by all accounts, was their own doing). this has created a snowball effect because it literally touches every detail of the show because everything is so interconnected.
also realize that it may seem like there is more criticism, and that's simply because there are more people watching the show now compared to even 2-3 years ago. with more people we're going to have more opinions -- some with which we agree, and others with which we don't.
