it is almost tempting to do a running blog of this, except then I'd have to watch it.

Twenty years, wow. This might have been the most I’ve ever looked forward to a movie.

Yep. I was 10 years old when this came out, and smack dab in the middle of my hardcore SW years. Nothing has ever duplicated how I felt when that opening crawl began.Anders wrote:Twenty years, wow. This might have been the most I’ve ever looked forward to a movie.

Re: Let's Actually Watch the Movie: The Phantom Menace
https://consequenceofsound.net/2019/05/ ... 2svtWKnidQAnother consequence of the film’s family-friendly approach is that the political wrangling central to the film gets far too little room to breathe. The Phantom Menace was meant to chronicle the decline of the democratic Old Republic into a tangle of sclerotic parliamentary maneuvers and runaway bureaucrats, a failure of democracy that paves the way for Ian McDiarmid’s Senator Palpatine to eventually seize power and declare himself emperor. It’s a noble aim, but one entirely at odds with the fact that this film is, again, intended for children. The result is a movie that relies greatly on political intrigue, but has absolutely no appetite for spending actual time with that intrigue.

I saw it 5 times in the initial run. And then bought the VHS when it came out. I've watched it on digital/home video probably a dozen times.VinylGuy wrote:Hard to think its been 20 years. Saw it twice on the cinema then never again...maybe one more in dvd when it came out?

I love the droids. Wish they weren’t quite so silly in this movie. Really fun playing with them on Battlefront II.

I was a junior in high school when this came out. We camped out overnight for tickets & lining up for the first screening. Obviously was the height of my fandom after the special editions. Great memories, but sadly a pretty cringy movie with some of the worst dialogue ever. I love parts of it but have never been able to sit through a full viewing since I turned 30.

Saw it twice in theaters, watched it probably something like 50 times (just guessing) on VHS, and then more on DVD. Watched it a few times on BD as well.durdencommatyler wrote:I saw it 5 times in the initial run. And then bought the VHS when it came out. Re: Let's Actually Watch the Movie: The Phantom Menace
This was the most anticipated movie for me at the time. I stood in line to get tickets. And I stood in line for the midnight show.
After it was over, the guy behind me said to his friend "Damn. I have two more tickets to see this this weekend." But it wasn't a happy statement.
I was telling myself this was an awesome movie, but deep down I knew something was wrong.
Yeah, looking back, what a disappointment.
Nothing in this movie captures any of the magic GL performed in the OT. Except for opening crawl main theme and end credits theme

Yeah, it was a big disappointment. I remember getting out knowing it sucked and trying not to think about it. My friends were also trying to find good things about it.
I guess the good parts are everything with Maul, some bits with Obi Wan..Neeson.

I reluctantly saw this a second time in the theater because one of my good friends hadn't seen it yet. It was grueling that second time. But, I didn't want to affect his viewing at all by grumbling during it. But, he kept turning to me and saying "what the f*ck is this?"
The best things about this movie were the build-up/anticipation and the movie poster with Anakin's Vader shadow.

We came out liking the lightsaber battle as well, but in retrospect there wasn't a lot to it, story-wise. It just feels like a fight for the sake of being a fight.
Also, there's a lot of standing around in this movie, from what I remember.
Also, I never really felt the threat of a Trade Federation blockade, or of their assault and capture of the planet.
"People are dying, senator!" Uh, where? It looked like they just strolled in to the city and walked a whole bunch of costumed people around.
