BBQ brisket salad at DFW.

What a shit show this morning. Flight delays and changes up the wazoo. I’ll make it to dinner by the skin of my teeth.

I don't know what's worse, that salad or the fact that you have to spend time in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

What’s wrong with the salad? Or the metroplex? I’m glad I had to change flights this morning and ended up at DFW. I’m at least familiar with it. No clue what Charleston is like.

1. It's too big
2. and doused with dressing.
3. The croutons look stale

5...and pastrami?
6. Well now I'm just starting to talk myself into wanting that salad.

Or the metroplex?

1. Shopping malls seem to be the only industry there.
2. Their take on traditional Texas cuisine like Tex-Mex and BBQ feels closer to the Midwest than the actual state of Texas.

I hate myself for dousing the brisket with vinaigrette salad dressing. I was so hungry and frazzled from the first leg of the journey that I didn’t realize the murder I had committed until it was too late.

I wasn’t there very long. The salad was too big. I didn’t finish it - except for the brisket and onion rings.


The fella behind me in line specifically asked for no bacon on his same salad. At first I thought it was because he was probably from the Nation of Islam. But no, he was just smart. The bacon was unnecessary. Too much bacon, and there was too much low quality bleu cheese everywhere in that salad. “Bleh cheese,” if you will.

I may get some brisket to go, on my way back through tomorrow if my itinerary takes me there.

If you're going to SC, you're probably better off getting your Texas brisket from Lewis BBQ in Charleston rather than the DFW airport. Not even exaggerating. The pitmaster there made his bones assisting Aaron Franklin of Franklin BBQ, one of the best spots in TX.

Going to Kansas City in June. Where should I eat?

bbq: joe's KC, Q39, char bar, bb's lawnside, lc's, slaps, mcgonigles ... avoid some of the more canonical options like gates, arthur bryant's, and jack stack; they are mediocre tourist traps
greasy spoon/hole-in-the-walls: town topic, grandstand burgers, vietnam cafe (columbus park location), ricos taco lupe (lunch only), tacos el gallo
delicious bougie fare: grunauer (hands-down my favorite restaurant in the city; get the jagerschnitzel), le fou frog, bluestem, rye, the rieger, the antler room, extra virgin, happy gillis (for breakfast)
dive bars: hi-dive, chez charlie, the peanut (downtown location)
lounge/speakeasy/cocktail bars: green lady lounge, manifesto, tikicat, swordfish tom's, harry's country club, julep, the ship
hang out beer spots: KC bier co, brewery emperial, up-down (arcade bar); there are about 5 or 6 breweries in the crossroads neighborhood so if that's your thing just walk around to them all

- avoid the power and light district AT ALL COSTS
- for entertainment you'll probably want to stay in the crossroads or river market. westport is fun, but skews to the belligerently young and drunk
- KC is a commuter town, so you'll need to uber everywhere. but once you decide on a bar or restaurant, there is one of the other listed above w/in walking distance; that is, you should be able to find a bar<->restaurant combo w/in walking distance of each other no problem from the places listed above

Just a long weekend, and a lot of that will be occupied by a wedding, so I’m probably only gonna get the chance to go to a couple restaurants.

Not sure where I’ll be staying; I don’t think my wife and I have booked a hotel yet.

I was in KC for less than 24 hours and Joe’s is where my host took me. I took home some extra burnt ends to my wife.

Oh, I also had time to visit Boulevard Brewing Co. Impressive facility and nice view from the beer garden.

it is unrelentingly busy, if you decide to go plan to stand in line 30-45 minutes

the bbq alternatives are usually busy too, but literally no restaurant in town - bbq or otherwise - is as consistently busy as joe's
