HBO: Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire)

A lot of mixed reviews out there for sure. While it felt like the slowest moving episode of the season Peter Dinklage in particular got a chance to do some great work.

In the end, it suffered from Lost syndrome. Birthed by an interesting idea and populated by engaging figures, it slowly succumbed to the easy provocation of Surprise of the Week storytelling. And like Lost (or Battlestar Galactica), it chased that approach too far away from home to be capable of organically finding its way back for the end. So it instead became a manic hot and cold of tender (but often unearned) fan service moments and caffeinated spectacle, with the writers desperately trying to make an ending feel organic that simply couldn’t.

Fortunately for the show, the changeover from crafted storytelling to weekly breakroom gossip piece was slow enough that the frog mostly didn’t notice it was boiling. And like a new Pearl Jam album, the final season looked and felt enough like the Game of Thrones you first met all those years ago to appease that most devoted fans...the ones who want to believe. You gotta know you’ll never let her go. She’s a lightning bolt.

I've been wondering the same thing. Who was sitting by Edmure? Who's the new ruler of Dorne?

I'm going to try and post more thoughts if I get some time this week, but I caught up on season 8 this week. Overall I was happy with how it ended, and there were some thrilling moments this season.


Plot wise, and even character motivation wise I am fine with pretty much all the choices they made, who lived, and where they ended up. They weren't always the ones I wanted but they were grounded in the text of the story. They did feel rushed in some important cases, though (I needed more time to buy Dany/Jon's love, for instance). I would have liked to give the show one more season or a few more episodes so they could really linger in some of those character spaces.

The battle scenes were generally shot really well with some powerful images. I think my two favorites on the season were Drogon melting the iron throne and the dothraki charge at the night king's army.


It seemed like the dothraki and unsullied (and the northmen, for that matter) were pretty much wiped out after the night king battle - the army that showed up was a bit too large


It did end with a little bit of a whimper in the final episode.

I've been wondering the same thing. Who was sitting by Edmure? Who's the new ruler of Dorne?

No idea who sat next to Edmure, but the guy in Dornish robes was the prince of Dorne. I believe Wyman Manderly sat with Lord Royce on the right side

- "lord of grammar" joke
- the over-the-shoulder shots of the Starks heading towards their destinies
- Grey worm chceking Jon and killing the Lannister soldiers
- call back to Jamie's history being blank
- Ghost!
- Final shot was perfect

Bad:
- every line uttered by Sam
- Grey worm maintaining control after Dany's demise makes no sense
- Tyrion's lame story speech
- implied intentional melting the throne by Drogon
- the entire electoral college scene (cut this and the episode would have felt much better)
- The fucking book (why? Why?)

Grey Worm maintaining control didn’t make sense? Have you never heard of a military holding power when a ruler is deposed?
