It basically was a prison camp for awful people for a few thousand years. Your high-born kid is a disgrace? Send him to the Wall. The wildlings are getting restless and we need a few more bodies to put in the way? Send a bunch of guys who were just going to rot in prison cells anyways. Lost your honor for one reason or another and need to feel good about yourself? Go to the wall. As the events of the show were unfolding, it was basically the first time in a hundred generations that the NW was serving its intended purpose. Now that the WWs are gone, it will probably just be a prison camp again.darth_vedder wrote:They should have destroyed the wall, and just made it a prison camp for all the awful people like Jon.Chris_H_2 wrote:i asked this a long time ago. careful -- the natives here will get angry at you posing otherwise legitimate questions.McParadigm wrote:What is the wall/Night’s Watch protecting them from now?

I'm still processing how I feel about all of it. I think it's totally okay to not have an opinion on this yet.

Durden you nailed it with Arya going West of West. Predicted the (happy?) fate of your favorite character. Cheers, brother.
What is the population of Essos compared to Westeros?
Can someone post a map with definitive borders of the 7 (or now 6 + North) kingdoms? Even better, a map of Essos with borders, too? Among other things I am curious about what is now the border between the North and the rest of Westeros.
And finally I’m sure you all saw the small plant growing from the snowy ground as Jon, Tormund and crew headed back up north beyond the wall? Foreshadowing the next crisis Westeros will face: Global Warming.

Re: HBO: Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire)
My immediate reaction before I went to bed last night was "welp," but after sleeping on it a bit and reading some discussion, I'm feeling better about the way things ended for most of these characters. This episode was probably the most rushed I've ever seen this show, though, and that really disappointed me. I loved the first half but at the same time I found myself calculating time left in the episode and stacking that up against how much more plot was left and getting very anxious.
The ending series arcs really should have been two seasons. 6-8 episodes of the night king and 6-8 episode of dany v cersei.

Thanks, man. I have to say, as far as Arya's story goes, I'm thrilled. Take out the really bizarre sidetrack from E5 (which it seemed like even D&D tried to retcon in this ep) and her story was perfect. I'm so fucking happy with how all that played out.Bammer wrote:Durden you nailed it with Arya going West of West. Predicted the (happy?) fate of your favorite character. Cheers, brother.
Favorite character in literary history.

Re: HBO: Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire)
so the series starts with a bunch of wildings getting butchered north of the wall from a threat that eventually drives them south of the wall led by jon.
i like how the last scene is them getting to return to their home without that threat and being led by jon.

Like when George RR Martin said the white walkers and “winter is coming” were all about global warming, and how we let our petty squabbles distract us from the real existential danger we face, but then they just killed them all in a rush so they could have more time for petty squabbles. And finally I’m sure you all saw the small plant growing from the snowy ground as Jon, Tormund and crew headed back up north beyond the wall? After another butchering in the south, no less. Well, technically a burninating, but still.Chris_H_2 wrote:so the series starts with a bunch of wildings getting butchered north of the wall from a threat that eventually drives them south of the wall led by jon.

Bran should have gotten up and walked out of the board room in his final scene, and just as he opens the door, turns around and gives a wink.

Sorry if someone mentioned it already but - Tyrion finding Jamie and Cersi in the pile of rubble is totally absurd, why would they be at the top of the pile and not beneath it ? and the bodies aren't even crushed?

Re: HBO: Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire)
i thought that after tyrion gave his little speech and formally nominated bran as the new king and asked him if he'd accept, bran should've started an answer like "after careful consideration, i have decided . . ." and then trailed off with his eyes rolling back into his head and warged, with the other characters just sitting there in silence tapping their fingers and feet and looking at each other for an entire hour.

My wife just relayed to me that Robin Arryn was the young lord on that electoral council that I didn't recognize last night. That kind of blew my mind.

I think I was mostly disppointed that Varys' "reveal" notes never became part of the finale's drama.

Yeah, I kept wondering if any of those made it out. Also was curious why Jon's lineage wasn't brought up with the electoral college.EJ wrote:I think I was mostly disppointed that Varys' "reveal" notes never became part of the finale's drama.

i thought the part of that scene where they continued to play on ridiculing edmure was a little too kitschy for my tastes.washing machine wrote:My wife just relayed to me that Robin Arryn was the young lord on that electoral council that I didn't recognize last night. That kind of blew my mind.
