Think of the months where people in production had access to script snippets where Jar Jar talks or interacts in scenes. Think of pre-production meetings where they go over costumes and cgi designs for Jar Jar, and how the actor would portray him on set. Think of all the little meetings that happen throughout a typical film start up and into the early stages of production....
No one thought Jar Jar was a bad idea? Or even questionable?

I have no real strong feelings about Ewoks in general. I don't hate everything about Jar Jar. But all of the sort of modern day references/jokes really hurt the film for me, and Jar Jar, unfortunately, has a lot of those moments.
Having Anakin build Threepio as a boy is probably the lamest, laziest ret-con that Lucas ever executed. Maybe 2nd to Greedo shooting first but I don't really count that anymore.
Kinda everything he does actually...all the tripping, all his dialogue, his interactions with other people or monsters or whatever..felt so cheap, so Disney it was just awful.
TPM is the most safest and Disney movie from all the saga.

I've been listening to The Phantom podcast and just wanted to see what they've been talking about.
I don't really have any strong feelings about the star wars movies, but I do enjoy listening to Griffin and David talk about them.
I did once see a fan cut of the prequels which trimmed out the midichlorians crap, toned down some of the boring political stuff and completely redubbed Jar Jar and all the racist aliens and they were pretty good.
There were practical sets and models built for TPM than any other film afaik.
They even built a massive model of the city of Theed, Padmes capital. It’s a stunningly beautiful model.
But yeah the cgi is overbearing in a lot of it. No arguments on that
I'm watching some dumb YouTube doc about The Phantom Menace. And they're talking A LOT about how disappointing the title was when it first came out (and still is). Man, I REALLY disagree. I think it's a solid title. *shurgs*
