I'd also say that while Reveal is a spotty record for me, if that's the worst (or second worst) record you've made in a 30-year career, you're doing pretty well.

I'll revisit your playlist once Country Feedback is on there

after skimming this thread, got inspired and just tried putting it on Around The Sun because I really hadn't heard anything after Up. eh, changed it to Pixies instead.

My endorsement of that record should have told you that you were going to hate it.

Did anyone listen to that RSD release? 'Bingo Hand Job'?

I had the CD of the full gig when I was at uni. It got stolen. I've got the vinyl, but my player is in getting repaired at the moment. The RSD release has been cut down quite a lot, but my memory of it is that it was a fun addition

I dont think PJ has a bad album. Their more unfocused and repetitive one is LB for me. At the same time, they dont have the bulk of material REM had and after BS they seem to have lost the urge of making challenging music.

I would love for PJ to release an album as ATS, Monster or New Adventures and to be far away of the idea of making an Accelerate for example.

I feel that happened already with Backspacer.

I agree with this sentiment, with New Adventures being a perfect example because it blended the familiar sound with a lot of new sounds from R.E.M. I am pretty sure that New Adventures in HiFi is one of the best albums I have ever heard. Definitely in my top 10 all time favorite albums.

got the r.e.m. email blast today, which had a couple interesting things. monster 25 is coming, was one. the other was that michael stipe, who has ditched the beard, opened a couple shows for patti smith and debuted some new songs. the linked consequence of sound article had videos:

ah, copperplate, a font for the truly modern man.

I missed out on a lot of great music by narrowing my focus - when I was younger - on PJ. So Hi-Fi, and most of the REM canon were out of my line of sight. It's only within the last couple of years I've listened to - and gotten into - Murmur, Reckoning, and Lifes Rich Pageant, which were all suggestions from a coworker. He swears by those albums, but never brings up Hi-Fi when talking REM.

Glad that I decided to check Hi-Fi out. It's a wonderful album. The opener is just... :nice:

I like those first three REM records well enough (Pageant is even in my #3 all-time REM record). But there's something so special about Hi-Fi. That record is everything. So glad you gave it a chance and that you dig it.

Is it because Patti Smith sings on Ebow the letter?

I think Hi-Fi is far and away the best REM album.
