Re: Brexit
You’ll hear brexiters complaining the EU is undemocratic. 400 million can vote in this weekends EU elections.
And somehow, this happens.

Re: Brexit
England, constantly mad at its government for failing to find agreement on this Brexit thing, is itself no closer to finding agreement with this Brexit thing.
Overall, 35% of voters voted for parties comfortable with no deal (the Brexit Party and UKIP).
Equally, 35% backed one of the three UK-wide parties (Lib Dems, Greens and Change UK) that supported a second referendum. If Plaid Cymru (1%) and the SNP (3.5%) are included, the Remain share of the vote is just over 40%, although the SNP is known to secure considerable support from those who voted Leave.

That last part about the SNP is demonstrably false. They’re remain to the core as was Scotland as a whole.

Re: Brexit
These EU and local elections are being seen as a referendum on the referendum and this tells its own tale.
Tories and labour wiped out all over the UK but especially in Scotland. SNP and Sturgeon already today talking about pushing for their independence referendum and away from the brexit debacle

Re: Brexit
What game? If I could vote there, I would have voted remain. But that’s not what we are talking about here. 38% of Scotland voted leave, so SNP having leave voters would not be strange.dimejinky99 wrote:Anders wrote:Well, 38% of Scotland voted for Brexit.

Re: Brexit
That’s a really weird almost Fox News spin on it. I thought we still lived in a 50+1 majority wins system but ok.
I’m fairly sure SNP voters didn’t and wouldn’t vote for leave.
Tories Labour brexit party are there if you want to vote for that. (Well, Labour not so much).
Brexit doesn’t have any support in SNP. They’re completely against it.

Re: Brexit
I looked it up. Research shows that 36% of SNP voters voted to leave the EU.

Re: Brexit
The EU and independence are two different questions, and voting for one doesn’t mean you will vote for another.

«In July 33% of Leave voters said they would back independence, while in August 36% said they would do so. Now the figure stands at just 29%. In contrast, support for independence amongst Remain voters has held steady – at 51% it is much the same in today’s poll as the 50% recorded in August and the 52% registered in July.»

Re: Brexit
To be fair that was last year. Last nights results tell a totally different story.
And only today Scottish First Minister Sturgeon in Dublin saying she’s planning for an independence referendum late next year.
You don’t say or do that as a leader unless you’re confident it will carry.
Unionist/loyalist Scots that want to remain in the UK are a really really odd cohort.
Have a look at indyref/Scottish independence hashtags on twitter.
Some really bizarre thinking from them and very odd takes. Scotland is ‘too small/too poor’ to be independent.
It’s a weird version of Stockholm syndrome in many ways.

Re: Brexit
It’s just two different things, independence and the EU. The SNP is not a one case party either, and even says outright that people that are against independence should vote for them as well.

Hopefully for them, a second vote will be more positive because of Brexit:

And her appeal to vote for SNP even if you don’t want independence, worked.
They stormed home in every constituency last night. There’s no real viable option up there. As evidenced by the result.
SNP made gains. Brexit party fed off labour and Tories losing votes.
I think we’re saying the same thing but viewing it from different ends of the spectrum.

Re: Brexit
*british media has been so bonkers today. The amount of spinning from media and parties is just insane.
All sides claiming a victory. When in fact it’s pretty much as you were with brexit party taking the UKIP vote, and Lib Dems and Greens taking all labour and Tories.
So it’s exactly as it was but with different parties out front.
So bizarre.

I do think we agree politically on all this yes. Probably just see some numbers a little different, maybe not even that.

Farage now calling for a general election. Knowing full well this will just add to the chaos and waste more time leading to no deal.

Re: Brexit
The arrogance and hypocrisy. Astounding. One of a number of PM contenders that have come out saying they will not ‘allow’ Scotland to have a referendum on independence.
Brexit Britain is just so completely bizarre.
Scotland publishes its independence referendum bill

The 2 parts of Wales where most people can speak Welsh, Gwynedd and Anglesy, voted Plaid and the rest Brexit party. Gwynedd also voted Remain. Talk about cultural genocide...

So basically, Johnson and May spent Trump's presidency fighting each other over how best to sell the NHS to Trump.

Re: Brexit
Trump has said today that the National health service in Britain is on the table for any US/UK trade deal. He means carving a taxpayer funded free health service up and feeding it to private interests into a US style system. Cos that works so well for all.
