Ludwig only does what he is told to do. His recent Frank Zappa remasters are superb. Some of his Queen remasters ain't too shabby either.

Ludwig did most but not all of them. Doug Sax did a couple (he's the guy who remastered Pink Floyd), and "Hot Rats" was done by Bernie Grundman. Doesn't matter because they're all superb.

Ludwig did the new "Sheik Yerbouti" which is a revelation if you've lived with the old CD.

All I could think was "Bruce worked with Brendan, and Bruce listened to him, so we thought maybe we should start listening to him, too."

The album would have been way more powerful if it were more nebraska'ish

Fuck BOB
Have you ever heard any of the bootlegs from the Devils and Dust tour? That's probably what the album would have sounded like. Highly recommended if you've never heard any of it.

The weird thing is that it's not like Devils and Dust ever had the potential to be a monster hit record. I'm not sure what commercial fate he thought he was saving it from by making it shimmer. The original record would have been a critically lauded record directed primarily at fans, which is pretty much exactly what the released version ended up being anyway.

The thing these producers have in common, who want to give everything "more commercial appeal", is that they don't know what the fuck they're talking about except for "give me more control because I'm a failed commercial product as well and I need a stake in this".

I listen to the Love, Tears & Mystery compilation, albeit not the whole, quite often.

thats true, but if I recall (it's been a while) devils and dust is a lovely sounding record as recorded .

Yeah, it's fine -- I think it still sounds sparse and intimate in a lot of places. "Black Cowboys" is one of Bruce's best songs ever.

I think I have switched to a new level of hatred regarding BoB.

Die, motherfucker, die!

Haha

Time for PJ to scrap him and move in a different direction.

The image that spawned yet another locked thread on The Pit. They don't like criticism over there very much. In the immortal words of Stone, "I need something different!" I think making some public criticism is one of the few ways we have to lobby for change that the band may notice.

He's the Bob Rock of PJ.... going back to an ex... always bad idea. Maybe they needed him to help arrange for Backspacer, couldnt have got that from Kasper... I dunno, Avocado is an anomaly that makes me think the band have more of a say it in that they let on. Eddie isnt technical about his guitar sounds but I bet Stone is, he can textualise and all that.

Im thinking of the scene in Some Kind Of Monster where Rock chases Hetfield after he has a fight with Lars... its hilarious..

Dont know what to make of it though... he has produced some awesome records for them... its the loudness wars but also him telling them to put what songs on the album...I was really hoping they wouldnt put SBM on it.... it cheapens the tracklist immediately... unless it absolutely had to be heard and reinterpreted...

Anyone ever see that Brady Bunch episode where Greg? aspires to be a musician? He meets with a "hot shot" producer dude with "groovy" clothes and a swaggering know-it-all style, saying Greg? Brady "fit the suit, baby". Brendan O'brien is that dude.

How come he does all the keys on the album? Fuckin' Boom should be on the album.

"OK, Boom, we don't trust you to fucking play when it's actually being recording, but I guess you can spend a few months away from your family traveling around and playing what Brendan wrote."

Shit, he's even in the video.

I don't hate BO'B, but why's Boom always get fucked?
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

"You know what this really needs? More Boom!" - said no Pearl Jam fan ever.
