Ludwig did most but not all of them. Doug Sax did a couple (he's the guy who remastered Pink Floyd), and "Hot Rats" was done by Bernie Grundman. Doesn't matter because they're all superb.

Ludwig did the new "Sheik Yerbouti" which is a revelation if you've lived with the old CD.

I just came across a quote from Brendan O'Brien about Springsteen's Devils and Dust, where he said that Bruce originally envisioned a moodier, sparser and more Nebraska-esque record....and that he shooed him away from it by saying something like "Yeah, you can do a record like that, and it won't really connect with a lot of people....or you can make a record that people will connect with."

All I could think was "Bruce worked with Brendan, and Bruce listened to him, so we thought maybe we should start listening to him, too."

The album would have been way more powerful if it were more nebraska'ish

Have you ever heard any of the bootlegs from the Devils and Dust tour? That's probably what the album would have sounded like. Highly recommended if you've never heard any of it.

The weird thing is that it's not like Devils and Dust ever had the potential to be a monster hit record. I'm not sure what commercial fate he thought he was saving it from by making it shimmer. The original record would have been a critically lauded record directed primarily at fans, which is pretty much exactly what the released version ended up being anyway.

The thing these producers have in common, who want to give everything "more commercial appeal", is that they don't know what the fuck they're talking about except for "give me more control because I'm a failed commercial product as well and I need a stake in this".

Yeah, it's fine -- I think it still sounds sparse and intimate in a lot of places. "Black Cowboys" is one of Bruce's best songs ever.

I dunno, Avocado is an anomaly that makes me think the band have more of a say it in that they let on. Eddie isnt technical about his guitar sounds but I bet Stone is, he can textualise and all that.

Dont know what to make of it though... he has produced some awesome records for them... its the loudness wars but also him telling them to put what songs on the album...I was really hoping they wouldnt put SBM on it.... it cheapens the tracklist immediately... unless it absolutely had to be heard and reinterpreted...
