I'm glad they've done it this way. It's still really effective.
Oh for sure. I didn't mean to imply that it isn't effective.
Oh, no, I didn't take it that way. Just agreed with your explanation.

Then there are a lot of little stories throughout (episode 4 covers this well) that humanizes the whole thing. But yeah, mostly the impact of this incident is painted broadly. Groups like firefighters, miners, Pripyat residents, bureaucrats etc are depicted as being affected en masse without zooming in.
Yeah, this is exactly what I was trying to say. I don't expect there to be much hope in a show that opens with a suicide and then zooms out to a nuclear meltdown. :P But this general approach isn't totally working for me. Will keep watching because the production is still very impressive, and I'm encouraged to hear that E4 addresses my complaint.
After episode four, you'll long for those scenes when faceless helicopter pilots plunge into a radioactive death plume oblivion.

The sound direction in this show is unfuckwithable. That clicking sound of the dosimeter is absolutely nauseating. Fantastic work

It’s called a Geiger Counter, and yes the sound of it makes my skin crawl.

This is a masterpiece of story telling as well though.

Got the score and wow it's great. Really fits the atmosphere of a book I'm reading as well.

HBO hasn't put the episodes all On Demand but they're running the series next weekend. I'll have to add to my dvr so I can watch them the following week.

This score is amazing. I checked out what she did for Sicario 2 and that one's...well, better isn't the right word because they're so different so I'll just say they're both really great.
