No Cities To love and A New Wave are so subpar, b sides material its a huge drop off comparing them with the previous three.

Bury Our Friends lifts again, but Hey Darling again puts a b side collection taste on this album.
Luckily, Fade comes and its the best album of the whole. Sounds like a single from The Woods with Corin really going for it. I just adore the guitars, the chorus...wow.

go in order, starting with S/Tdurdencommatyler wrote:Okay, so given that I've only heard NCTL and The Woods and I really dig both of those... what album should I dive into next? Should I just jump back to the beginning and start there?
they seriously got better with every album
The Woods / When the Going Gets Dark (Quasi) is Janet at her absolute best! back to back killer albums
I actually like NCTL the song, more than NCTL the album so I guess I'm in the minority on here

i'm hoping some of the songs on the new album are better than this first single, and they don't have that "St. Vincent wanted to make a rock record, but knew she couldn't make the rock record she wanted, so she's using Sleater-Kinney as her vessel" feel to it.

While im exited about this album and i love the single, yes i see this too. Specially in the promo picks it. Corin looks so side tracked and Janet is barely there in the single.tragabigzanda wrote:Carrie's turn towards "I love fame" coupled with her dating St. Vincent, and Annie's obvious stamp on this thing, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I have no idea, but the music and the promo material doesn't feel like a SK album to me; it feels like an Annie/Carrie project with Corin and Janet just playing their parts.bodysnatcher wrote:i'm hoping some of the songs on the new album are better than this first single, and they don't have that "St. Vincent wanted to make a rock record, but knew she couldn't make the rock record she wanted, so she's using Sleater-Kinney as her vessel" feel to it.

I feel like Carrie's been taking over since The Woods.

It was Janet actually who was pushing the sound in The Woods. She was the one that really loved that producer / wanted that "noise" If you listen to the Quasi album that was out around the same time it actually has a very similar feel. And the band soon after went on hiatus because Carrie couldn't handle the fame... But since Portlandia I would definitely agree with your statement.Leatherhead wrote:I feel like Carrie's been taking over since The Woods.

Shit, I didn't even realize they had a new single. I think it's fucking great. It sounds new and different and exciting.
I'm glad they're not going out on NCTL.

FWIW, from a critic and fan of the band:
That being said, I felt like Corin and Janet were as present on NCTL as they've always been, maybe even more so. Carrie took the lead on two, maybe three songs? There's a lot of songs on there where Corin's taking the lead pretty much all the way through the track (with the caveat that saying one singer's taking the lead vocal on a song can sometimes be tricky with SK).
