He wasn't. With the bet he made if he got it right and Emma got it wrong he wins without any risk of the third place dude overtaking him.

Ok. I was just reading too much into it.
He could have bet a little bit more (3201) and covered a situation where Emma gets it wrong but bets 0, which was what I intuitively thought he should have done. But there's no way she does that so it's not as smart as I thought it was.
