Yeah, it's going to be different answers for a variety of dishes for most people, I guess. I realize the question was broad, but it's an interesting one to me. It occurred to me the other day when I was at one of those fusion taco places eating a Nashville Hot tofu taco and realizing that I only ordered it because it was "Nashville Hot."

I have never experienced anything like that from spicy food. I think it's a myth.

It's weird the little things that your family did/does to food that are hard to explain to other people. For example, when I was a kid my family would put sugar on the slice of cheese before putting the other slice of bread on. I haven't made it that way as an adult but I remember liking it. Opposite that, my mom put a slice of tomato on one when I was a kid and that feeling of hot slimy tomato made me hate cooked tomatoes for a very long time. I got over it, but it took some time away from the situation.

You did that too? Man every time I do that people act like I'm crazy.

We would also take a big, fresh tomato and put some salt on it after taking a bite out like it was an apple.

I just realized I forgot to say this is in regards to making grilled cheese. So a grilled cheese with a slice of cheese and a sprinkling of sugar, and then a grilled cheese with a slice of tomato.

ikr? I haven't heard a single other person say they've heard of that so I have to imagine it's something my parents came up with because they're the ones who served it to us.

I tried it a couple of years ago. I did not like it.

My mom has done this my whole life.
