So I guess Danny won't be able to land AD with all his future hall of famer young assets after all.

I bet the genius is really glad he didn't foolishly trade for Kawhi last season....

Or give up "basically Jimmy Butler Crowder" for Butler before that.

The Celtics could have included Brown, Tatum, Rozier and Smart for Kawhi and still would have been millions away from matching the salary. Those Brown for Kawhi reports are a fantasy. Celtics problem was they had too many cheap players and not enough bad mid level contracts to make that trade. Even if they could have made it work its revisionist history to act like it was a no brainer. I said I'd do it when we were talking about it here but it wasn't clear cut at all. Kawhi missed an entire season. He doesn't speak so no one knew if he was healthy. He said he wouldn't resign with Boston. The Celtics came off a fantastic run with their young players which in hindsight was the worse thing that could have happened to them but at the time it seemed like they were on a championship trajectory. Not being sure if trading your young cheap up and coming talent for a injured player who didn't want to play for you anyways seemed prudent. Meanwhile the Raptors had nothing to lose. They traded a player they didn't want anyways and took a chance on Kawhi and if he left well they were going to tear it down anyways. Danny's fuck up wasn't passing on Kawhi it was trusting that talent trumps personalities. Kyrie being an insufferable asshole, Rozier and Brown thinking they were superstars now, Tatum and his mamba mentality, Hayward's sad eyed PTSD bullshit acting like he just came back from 3 tours in 'Nam after breaking his ankle is the reason they flamed out.

Good news: Beadle, Pierce and Billups aren't returning to NBA Countdown next season.

This is fair. Buuuuuut....players like Kawhi (top 3 player in the leage, one of the 2 best defensive players this decade) don't become available very often and for a franchise that struggles on the FA front but had a ton of chips I don't think there's an excuse. I don't think it was surprising at all that the Celtics didn't turn into a super team when Kyrie and Hayward came back, though I admit that I didn't think it'd go as badly as it did. I get the health question marks, but this time last year Verb was reporting that Kyrie was being fitted for a prosthetic leg and obviously Hayward should have been. Pop would probably have taken Kyrie if you guys went that route, and he definitely would have taken a couple of the younger guys, but regardless of what direction Ainge chose to go the Celtics had so much to trade for it could have gotten done and wouldn't have been that expensive. I think the bottom line is that Ainge, and a lot of Celtics fans, overvalued what they had.

They can still have AD if they want, so it's not as if it's all over for them. They just got burned by (probably) getting no value at all for Kyrie, which they obviously didn't expect. As long as Horford sticks around the Celtics will be fine next year and might even be better off without Kyrie. But it's hard to imagine that they wouldn't be in the Finals right now if they had gotten Kawhi.

If the Raptors win and/or Kawhi stays with Toronto I'll admit in hindsight it would have been a missed opportunity for the Celtics. It really would have come down to who got shipped out though. Everyone on that team outside of Al and Marcus Smart had their heads so far up their own asses this year I have a hard time seeing Kawhi not running as fast as he could out of Boston.

Well when you say it like that it sounds absurd, but he's been the foundation for that team since he's been there.

If anyone needs me I’ll be at TD Garden counting all the Horford-era banners. It could take me a while.

Prediction for tonight: Raps have a hot start. Warriors chip away at the lead, with the Raptors never quite giving up the lead until the last few minutes, but a few clutch Kawhi possessions end the series with a Raptors win.
