Why

It's fun and colorful and has a playful, unique mix of musical undercurrents (starts with a sorta Mexican flavor, then morphs into a Cajun thing).

Feels like a hokey showtune to me but I’ll give it a few more chances.

I'll write up more later, but I feel like it rides the line between being incredibly hokey AND genuine. There's a wearied joy to it that is missing from similar songs in his catalogue.

Favorite song: The Wayfarer

Great: Tucson Train, Western Stars, Sleepy Joe's Cafe, Drive Fast, Sundown, There Goes My Miracle, Hello Sunshine, Moonlight Motel

Decent: Somewhere North of Nashville (he comes dangerously close to that D&D twang I can't stand), Stones (good, but a little samey and overlong)

Weak: Hitch Hikin' (music seems like merely an intro and the lyrics seem awfully hackneyed to me), Chasin' Wild Horses (it's solid but the blatant similarity to "Your Own Worst Enemy" really bugs me)

I found it this afternoon. What a beautifully composed album. One of my favorites in quite a while. And I quite enjoyed Sleepy Joe’s Cafe, which I think adds levity at the right moment where the album can use it.

Also, the second half of Chasin Wild Horses is so grand and epic - probably my favorite moment on the album. Agreed with Wayfarer as my early favorite overall. Hello Sunshine in this context is also very close.

I think all the singles do. I was honestly pretty lukewarm on all of them when they were released individually. Now I think "Tuscon Train" is probably my favorite thing here, with "Hello Sunshine" not far behind.

Hello Sunshine was an instant highlight to me. The others I enjoyed, but not at the same level.

Speaking of this, I think it’s worth mentioning that this a flawlessly sequenced album, which is a real rarity for Bruce. I think that’s a big part of why I like it so much. Every song fits just where it should. It’s paced perfectly, there’s no flab, it never lulls or grows tiresome. Everything’s arranged so that sun shines in right when it needs to. Beautiful work.

This spurred me to revisit Devils & Dust, which I’m appreciating a bit more. The production is bad and Bruce’s vocals are weird but I’m finding more to like. “Long Time Comin’” and “Maria’s Bed” are good. Never noticed all the lyrics from “Further On (Up the Road)” in the latter.
