I'd maybe bump Life & Limb for Epic Problem

My all time favorite Springsteen song may be Kitty’s Back, but since I am listening to each of the albums in turn I will reserve that statement a bit. I would put Rosalita way up there too. I will say that this far, I have grown a much stronger opinion on New York City Serenade, which I never seriously listened to that much before today. I always kind of felt the album was over after Rosalita.

A beautiful description, and one of my favorite albums too. I've always heard this album as the first in a trilogy of sorts, with "Born to Run" being a sort of desperate attempt to cling to said August ("hey, let's jump in this car and drive far from here, to a nameless Utopia where work and responsibility and adulthood don't exist"), and "Darkness" as a sort of tragic reckoning with the realization that work and responsibility and adulthood exist everywhere.

This is exactly my thoughts. I actually think that The River expands on this concept through resignation and at times celebration of the small victories within this reality once on the inside. Not coincidental that most of the highest ratings I anticipate come from these albums.

This is much of Springsteen for me...the River album shows really made me appreciate the album that much more. I would say I thought it was an average for Bruce album then it shot up in value for me seeing it live.

I don't think I've ever given a fair chance to Born In The U.S.A. I just gave it a few spins, and my god, it's actually pretty damn good. Only songs I really didn't like are Darlinton County and Working On A Highway .

Born to Run - my overall rating A+ (everything about this album is big and epic and sweeping and immediately cathartic while simultaneously finding something new to grow with every listen. One of my two favorites)

Songs to convert tree_: Backstreets, Born to Run (it has to be there just like if you were to play Alive for someone finding Pearl Jam), Jungleland

Also good listening: Thunder Road, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, Night, She’s the One, Meeting Across The River (aka the whole thing)

I am listening through the early albums pretty quickly so here’s the next one:

Darkness on the Edge of Town - my overall rating A+ (Born to Run’s near exact opposite, as this one is raw, pissed off, Clarence Clemons can barely be heard, the solos are Bruce’s, and songs stripped down and purposefully push off each other stylistically. Probably my favorite from Bruce)

Nebraska - my overall rating A (this is the moment to note how exceptional it is to see Springsteen rebel against himself and/or the expectations of others from album to album - responding to the grand epic that is Born to Run with the stripped down visceral Darkness, or as here responding to the kitchen sink that is The River with the sparse yet no less exciting Nebraska then the ultimate pop rock Born in the USA that comes next)
