Rewatched “The Witch” last night.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Watched Brightburn on Saturday - came away feeling pretty underwhelmed
Took the family to see Toy Story 4 yesterday, that was a good time - they absolutely nailed it again

Watched Hotel Mumbai on Friday- really enjoyed this, although I can see why the theaters over here stopped screening it after the Christchurch mosque attack.
Saturday we watched the new Shaft - this was good fun

"Wine Country"
Pretty dumb, but Tina Fey still owns every scene in anything she's in.

Re: What movies are you watching?
We watched Inherent Vice, Magnolia and The Master recently. I've seen them all several/multiple times but the raz hasn't really seen them like I have, and stoned.
Man... Inherent Vice is very good but that one scene with the nudity and masturbation (among others) and sex is hard to watch. I just wonder why they felt compelled to make that scene the way that they did. I don't really understand the point. But maybe that is the point? The way it makes you feel? Spacy, confused, nervous... it's kind of weirdly powerful, really... The movie makes you feel things, that's fur sure. 7.76 out of 9.94 rings of marijuana smoke.
The Master was the worst of the bunch. I love some scenes but I feel baffled by the end. It's hard to care about any of the characters and a lot of the movie feels pointless. Much of it is beautiful to look at and well acted, etc. but feels pointless. I do love that sequence when he's not blinking and answering questions then the flashback with the girl... very beautifully done. Something about this movie makes me want to see it again... I don't understand but I will probably watch this again within a year or so... I keep coming back and I don't know why. 6.32 out of 9.98 ocean ripples.
Magnolia was as good as ever. Emotionally powerful and gripping. This is probably the only movie in which I loved Tom Cruise's acting. What a perfect role for him. Almost everything about this motion picture works for me. It just clicks. 9.423 out of 10.12 Aimee Mann tracks.

Now I'm hoping to see Phantom Thread again soon.

I revisited Boogie Nights recently and I still liked it but much less than I used to. I don’t love the way it portrays the porn industry; feels oddly conservative and derisive, especially considering how much PTA supposedly loves vintage porn movies.
It’s really funny how close Reilly’s BN character is to his Step Brothers character.

Re: What movies are you watching?
For me, Boogie Nights isn't even about the content, but how it's made. I just love how I feel when watching it, despite the actual story. It's just lovely, fun, goofy, neat... The first thing I tend to think of when thinking of BN is that scene in Dirk's room where the camera moves in a circle and that music playing.. just makes me tingle with joy, etc...LoathedVermin72 wrote:I revisited Boogie Nights recently and I still liked it but much much less than I used to. Oh for sure, it’s a masterfully made film. I just don’t love the streak of moralistic conservativism that runs through it. Or the snarky way it portrays the filmmakers.
That Alfred Molina scene really is amazing, though.

Re: What movies are you watching?
Yeah that whole sequence is great. The whole movie seems like PTA is trying really hard to entertain his audience. I like his post-Magnolia output too for different reasons (challenging) but it'd be neat to see him make a fun movie like this again.

Re: What movies are you watching?
The Maze Runner and Hunger Ganes series were cool though. Good entertainment. Divergent-series is all over the place, lots of weird choices by the directors, and had an abysmal end.

I did not like the first Hunger Games so I didn’t bother continuing. Wouldn’t mind trying The Maze Runner someday.
