Just finished reading this gem, which is making me want to delve into The Dark Tower series, which I haven't read and know nothing about, so no spoilers please...

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I'm about 80 pages from finishing... Love it! What is really like to know is what is considered essential reading in the Dark Tower series.

I'm loving this daily affirmation / stoic philosophy. A good companion book, The Obstacle is the Way, has really begun to change perspectives around certain bad habits and moods in my life. Easy read, and easily practiced, especially when keeping the practice top-of-mind with the book, or the emails.

Let me know how it goes. I'm happy you're giving it a go, especially in light of reading about other positive changes you've made recently.

I'm about 80 pages from finishing... Love it! What is really like to know is what is considered essential reading in the Dark Tower series.

Well, all the actual Dark Tower books. And the spin-off books. Then, I’d say Salem’s Lot, The Stand (unfortunately), Eyes of the Dragon, Hearts in Atlantis ( which I’ve not read yet) and Insomnia (which I started years ago and never finished). There’s LOTS more that he ties into the series, but none feature as prominently as these. (I don’t think. I’ve not read many of his books past the last DT volume, but I have tried to keep up with what ties into it. I do plan on trying to catch up on his work one of these days.)

None.

The Dark Tower stands alone. You don't have to have read any other King books to appreciate it. However, many of his books connect in small, medium, large and extra large ways. So reading those will give you a different perspective on The Dark Tower. The one that has the "biggest impact" (which probably isn't the most accurate way to put it) is 'Salem's Lot.

However, you'll find tons of connections and things to dig out from all of the books wease mentioned. And there are others as well.

Ok, thanks. After reading Wind Through the Keyhole (a spinoff?), King's DT list is pretty long, started with Salem's Lot, includes It (which I will not read), and has many more titles, so I wasn't sure.

Looking forward to finally getting to know the Roland's universe and those cool billy bumblers.

thip, I’m not sure of your familiarity with King’s works, but 11/22/63 should be at the very top of your list.

I've only read Green Mile, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, and the aforementioned Wind Through the Keyhole and Salem's Lot. I've been wanting to immerse myself into something big, and The Dark Tower seems to be the one.

I’m like five episodes in, and while I appreciate its faithfulness to the book, I struggle with James Franco.

Other than Freaks & Geeks, this is my favorite thing I’ve seen him in.
