this is a pretty good thread idea. I like the two suggestions in the OP.

i don't know if RVM -> TMW was serious or not, but I'm not sure I see it.

RVM = Ed is aggressively driving his car to get away from past troubles, and looks back over his life and finds his freedom and is all like "I gather speed from you fucking with me. Once and for all you're far away."

TMW = Ed is hitchhiking to make a journey but in companionship with another driver, and on the way looks back over his life and his mortality. This time the freedom is more contemplative and mature. "I turned my back, now there's no turning back. Mmmmmmm."

Yup, compare Ten and Riot Act. No "growth" whatsoever.

Musically, the obvious one would be (riff wise) Corduroy to Sad. Not necessarily "better" (if that's what the growth thing can be described as) but it's certainly a riff with more bells and whistles added.
