it took a few listens but once the cacophony starts to sound a bit familiar and you're not thrown off by it the song is greatly improved.stupidmop wrote:I'm gonna be honest. I dunno where the lasers are in this song. I'll put it down to having not listened to the song more than 2 at the most.

I actually like the lasers. It is Matt's plodding beat and performance that drags the song down a notch. Overall, it's not as bad as some of Backspacer.stip wrote:it took a few listens but once the cacophony starts to sound a bit familiar and you're not thrown off by it the song is greatly improved.stupidmop wrote:I'm gonna be honest. I have my issues with Crowe's flow, direction, etc but I kept that to myself because I could truly see in his eyes and hear in his voice how much that movie did for him as a spring board to have the experience of diving into 20 years worth of music and it made me happy.
So happy that I put PJ20 on this morning for the first time since seeing it and tried to watch it through the eyes of someone who's never heard/scene this band and while I still have my issues (glossing over the drummer thing especially), the scene where they play Release and talk about its origins just gave me goosebumps and made me tear up a little.
It is so easy to get cynical and pre-judge things this band does (and some I outright wince at), but the band i have loved for about 2/3 of my life just played a show until 2 in the fucking morning while Phish and Pitchfork fest cancelled/stopped early.
I wasn't at Wrigley but relayed the story of that show to some friends who listen to rock and are at least vaguely familiar with Pearl Jam and got a nice "wow" reaction.
I'm rambling, but I had a fun Sunday morning because of PJ and there is really no other band that excites me like they do and I can't imagine a life without them.

I suppose this is a dangerous thing to do in a thread entitled "praising" but I was wondering yesterday whether anyone but me would like to praise them for Stupid Mop.
If you have an open mind about it, I was going to suggest you read Stip's SOTM about it, but I can't find the thread on the new board, which makes me think this is an even worse idea than I thought.
If Stupid Mop were just a bit less pedestrian, it would fit on something like White Light/White Heat which is one of the greatest albums ever made.

I don't think many would argue with you about that. Stupidmop does exactly what it sets out to do in the context of Vitalogy.

Really? I thought it was widely despised. I thought I got that impression here, but maybe I'm wrong...harmless wrote:I don't think many would argue with you about that. Stupidmop does exactly what it sets out to do in the context of Vitalogy.

I don't know, a few of us love everything about Vitalogy but I don't keep up with what's a majority opinion or whatever.

That part at the beginning of Fatal where the drums and bass come in is a thing of beauty.

After years of promises I think they're finally on the right track with the "Vault." The last two releases are just the kinds of things that should be coming out--good sounding shows from underrepresented years in the band's history. I find myself returning to both releases pretty often.

Disc 1 is fantastic. Disc 2 is pretty boring.
