Re: Come On Dave, Gimme a Break - The Van Halen Thread
I’m takin’ whiskey to the party tonight
And I’m lookin’ for somebody to squeeze
I ain’t lookin’ for somebody to fight
Baby, don’t get uptight
Baby, please
That’s got to be one of the greatest lines from a VH tune.

I am not sure DLR has a full-on, great song of lyrics but he has some great verses and lines.wease wrote:I’m takin’ whiskey to the party tonight

Mean Street’s pretty good.

First 5 albums:
01 - California Girls [Crazy From The Heat]
02 - Yankee Rose [Eat 'Em and Smile]
03 - Shyboy [Eat 'Em and Smile]
04 - Big Train [Your Filthy Little Mouth]
05 - Big Trouble [Eat 'Em and Smile]
06 - A Lil' Ain't Enough [A Little Ain't Enough]
07 - Elephant Gun [Eat 'Em and Smile]
08 - Just Like Paradise [Skyscraper]
09 - Hot Dog And A Shake [Skyscraper]
10 - Bump And Grind [Eat 'Em and Smile]
11 - Just A Gigolo , I Ain't Got Nobody [Crazy From The Heat]
12 - Goin' Crazy! [Eat 'Em and Smile]
It's heavy on Eat 'Em and Smile which is easily his best. If you got that album and the '97 Best of you'd have everything you'd need.

I can listen to DLR solo because Steve Vai is a beast, but then I just remember I can listen to Alien Love Secrets or Fire Garden if I want to hear him play guitar without hearing Dave go Boze Boze Boo See Boo or whatever.

The band had ran its course by then I don't know if anyone could have breathed life back into it.

Even though it was a rehash if songs and ideas they had before they initially broke up, I am a fan of A Different Kind of Truth.

Re: Come On Dave, Gimme a Break - The Van Halen Thread
A Different Kind of Truth has its moments. Roth sounds pretty bad though and I'm not a fan of the mix but those old riffs are great. Looking back at their output from '95-'04. Balance, III and two greatest hits albums. All had original songs and Dave, Sammy and Gary all had cracks at the music Eddie was writing at the time which was mostly the serious mid-90s Eddie riffs. It was a dead end. Maybe if they got Dave back, embraced the old sound and got Templeman to produce it would have worked in '95 but that doesn't seem like that was a realistic outcome considering the personalities at that time. We only got A Different Kind of Truth cause Wolfgang was digging around in some boxes and found some old tapes.

Aric Van Halen (son of Alex) was a track and field star in college, I don't know if he can sing but hes a good looking dude and could probably front the band for an all family line up.

Shit, I just read something where Aric said he "can't sing a lick". We need a new plan.

Re: Come On Dave, Gimme a Break - The Van Halen Thread
Inspired by this thread, as a general matter, I listened to 1984 today, which was my very first album. It still rocks though I can see that there’s a bit much of the synthesizer on a few songs. Nonetheless, they were in fine form and it still amazes me that they couldn’t work it out at the height of their powers.

Going through the Diamond Dave era while running while also going to Neil Young’s catalogue otherwise.
Van Halen, Van Halen II, and Women and Children First. All them are excellent though I prefer the first two. This is a catalogue I am mostly familiar with, but trying to listen with mostly fresh ears and well their music is pretty good to run to.

Re: Come On Dave, Gimme a Break - The Van Halen Thread
Got there. I like it a lot, and it is very consistent. I would say I liked it best of the Dave albums that tend to be forgotten in the mix. My Diamond Dave rankings: (1) Van Halen; (2) 1984 (love this album and it was my first album I owned); (3) Fair Warning; (4) Van Halen II; (5) A Different Kind of Truth; (6) Diver Down (underrated - it is such a quirky and fun album); (7) Women and Children First
