Do we have a suicide thread? Well anyway I was reading yet another article about how suicide rates are rising at frightening rates and some groups were affected more than others and bla bla bla, but when you look at the actual stats, suicide is still an incredibly rare phenomenon even under today's conditions. No doubt it will get worse as we become more and more alienated but is this really a crisis? Is this just more media hysteria?

But now we can't just throw our tv's out the window to disconnect. We are too dependant on the internet. We no longer have a choice whether to consume the media narratives and we are now just food for the machine and oh my god the basilisk has me again and...

Guys, why is it that you are more likely to dismiss something like this based on discrepancies in the definition of “mass shooter” (specifically when the pic itself defines that term as someone who kills four or more people in one instance), than you are to condemn a media that pushes a narrative that is often not backed by data?

Anyway it's because honing in on these discrepancies is a nakedly ideological and bad-faith reading of the situation and the fact that you think this lends you a mark of intellectual distinction would be hysterically funny if it wasn't so fucking sad.

Or are murdered inner city youth disposable and people killed in WalMart or churches aren’t? That seems racist to me. I disagree with that presumption. Just because the far-left rag Snopes says something may be conflation doesn’t make it so. In the same way that leftists disregard sources politically right of... socialism, I take anything I read from sources like Snopes with a skeptical eye. They have a narrative they are pushing, just like anyone else, you just happen to agree with them ideologically so you don’t question their narrative.

I don’t really have a problem with Phat’s demonstrated point, even as I disagree with it. The logical conclusion of both his argument and mine seems to be that gun violence touches so many communities, across the entire American spectrum, that only stringent gun laws can save us from this hellscape of unending mass murder.
