José Martínez Suárez was a giant of Argentine film, revered for his work as a director, his mentorship of some of the most significant names in the country's cinematic history, and his spearheading of the best film festival in Latin America. I had the honor of meeting him a couple of times and interviewing him once. He liked to refer to himself as "un viejo chinchudo" -- a cranky old man -- and while I'm sure he'd fit that description from time to time, I never saw him be anything but gracious and kind, even while running from room to room in the midst of a stressful festival.
