This movie was just as frustrating as any Taranrino film. Uneven, half-baked, filled with great performances and scenes but ultimately hollow. It's like reading a 14 year old's history class notebook if the kid has ADD and hates history. And also thinks Bruce Lee was a chode.

Leo is a revelation though. He should win awards for this performance.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

tragabigzanda wrote:Joe’s whole review stinks, but the “hollow” part is the worst part. This movie was a heart-filled love letter to a bygone era. Tarantino’s never been so full of emotion.

And the outcry over the Bruce lee scene is asinine. He made those funny sounds all the time, he carried himself with arrogant bravado on a regular basis, and he did talk about beating up Muhammad Ali. Pitt’s getting some shots in established his character as a badass withtout in any way besmirching Lee or Asian people.
Team Trag on the Bruce Lee bit.

I related to the characters a lot. This film had a lot of heart. The only thing hollow is Joey's head!

Yeah, but it's a love letter from an entited 14 year old boy who thinks it's romantic to stalk a girl for years before finally shoving the letter into her locker while she's in gym class on the last day of school, then turn around and call her his girlfriend all summer.

I do like a lot of the emotion in the film, though. It's one of the thing's strengths. Much of it is under developed and half baked. But still. I would never say it wasn't an emotional (esp for Tarantino) movie.

And you're obviously responding to something outside what I said. Having read zero reviews/discussions about this movie (including any in this thread) I'm not comfortable debating it. I'm only going off my own thoughts, not some mass "outcry."

It's a great scene. But that's it. Sharon Tate isn't even a character in the film. Margot Robbie is probably the best actor in the cast (at least 2nd best) and QT gives her next to nothing to do. He even takes a brief moment to imply that Sharon Tate could have had a thing for Manson. Thank god he got bored of that idea as quickly as all his other ideas in this thing. That could have been stip icky.

I didn't pick up on that. To me it looked like she approached everyone with open arms, love and kindness, even the man who would ultimately be responsible for her demise.

QT is amazing at scene work. He continues to be in this as well. The man should make shorts. Or actor audition reels. Then again, I'm not sure he's a competent director of actors. I think he needs great actors so he doesn't have to drop any heavy lifting.

But, yeah, some of the individual scenes in this are scary good. Sharon in the theater is one of them.

There's even a Steve McQeen monologue above it.
