I've never got along with Hendrix's studio material, but I really, really like the live stuff.

Well, it was the album he was working on in 1969/1970.
Most songs were already done and mixed, but others still needed some dubs.

After his death in 1970 the record company decided to spread all these new songs over multiple posthumous releases.
Like 'Cry of Love', 'Rainbow Bridge' and 'War Heroes'. Most of the songs on these records were from those final sessions.
They kept releasing crappy records like this until the late eighties. One of which 'VoodooSoup' even had rerecorded drum tracks by some session drummer.
In the mid 90s the Hendrix family finally got control over the legacy. The first thing they did was to release 'First Day of the New Rising Sun'. This album is as close as possible to an official Hendrix record. They used the most complete tracks available, they even used a tracklist written by Jimi. For me this record is already his best, if completed and released properly it would have been a true classic album.
Agreed in many respects. Not sure it is my favorite but there are many great songs on this release.

I can honestly say, I've grown to love Jimi more and more every year. I don't get this whole, growing over it that you're all talking about. :finger:

First Rays definitely has some gems on it. Freedom, Izabella, In from the Storm, and Hey Baby! Hey Baby is such a great song.
Band of Gypsys I prefer the live at the Fillmore 2 disc, and the complete first show, over the studio tracks. Ezy Rider and Earth Blues from night one, show one, are by far the best 2 versions of those songs. Machine Gun from night 1 show 2 is the ultimate version of that song as well.

What have you heard? When he's good he's good, but a lot of the live stuff is garbage, and it's usually because of Mitch Mitchell's ultra-shitty drumming. I have friends who worship Hendrix but can't listen to a lot of the live stuff and they usually cite Mitch as the reason.

Mitch was a smackhead, and sometimes you can hear him seemingly nodding off while he plays. It's brutal stuff.

The ultimate irony is that Hendrix's family has done deluxe packages of some of his worst recorded performances, but have still neglected to release the best two (San Diego and London 1969).

I don't want to totally agree with this, but I pretty much totally agree with this. I LOVE Jimi, and pretty much all his music, live, studio, the instrumental 20min long jams...
but Mitchs drumming, especially live, can be just so all over the place. I've never understood him constantly being in the top 10 for all time greatest drummers. I would have loved to have heard John Densmore and Jerry Scheff as Jimis rhythm section. Hell I'd have loved to hear the doors play live with those too which was most likely going to happen if Morrison didn't break on through to the other side.

Jimi live from the Winterland is a pretty awesome 4 disc set. Get that and the Band of Gypsys 2 disc set and complete opening show set. The rest is for us diehards

Winterland box is a weird anomoly in that is some of the absolute best and absolute worst playing by the Experience.

It's also bullshit how they presented the stuff as compilations from each night and then left some of the best stuff as "bonus" stuff on the 4th disc. They also edited many things that didn't need to be edited. I have a friend who threw that set in the garbage can, he was so angry when he heard it.

It should have/could have been a really tight 2-disc set of unedited performances and probably would have sold a lot more copies too.

The BOG first set is excellent and probably the best of the 4 sets overall.

The BOG 2-disc set is a mixed bag, with some low fidelity stuff mixed in with rough mixes and stuff mixed by Hendrix too, since the multi-tracks were not yet available at the time it came out. Not essential.

I highly reccommend Miami Pop Festival 1968. It's up there with San Diego and London in terms of performance quality, and there is no embarrassing stuff like on the Winterland box.

Some folks are probably thinking "who cares, another Hendrix concert"...but the RAH concert is one of his best caught on multi-track tape, if not the best...but it has been in severe legal limbo for 50 years.

So it will be a good one.

I would imagine it will be the big release next year, being the 50th anniversary of his death.
Gotta figure they'll make some sort of big release for it anyway.

I'm definitely excited, since ya know the audio quality on these releases will be top notch. That Hollywood Bowl concert on the Electric Ladyland box set was such a let down because of the quality of that soundboard.
Theres a constant hiss/humming going on, the vocals are too loud and distorted at times (think The Woods from Sleater Kinney at certain points but do it through the whole concert)
Makes it almost unlistenable. So with that being said, I'm going to put it on now cause I'm in the mood for some Jimi. :peace:
