The three that I know and love are:

Elite Hotel (1975)
Pieces Of The Sky (1975)
Wrecking Ball (1995)

The first two I love everything about. Wrecking Ball has some weaker material, but Daniel Lanois’s production elevates the entire record.

I’m all ears if there are other albums you’d recommend highly.
Me too, actually. I don't know any of her albums really well. Kinda like Neil Young, I've mostly consumed her work in single songs. I just love everything I've heard by her. Though my knowledge is limited.

The Bush years were so depraved everyone convinced themselves that the Hold Steady guy was a brilliant storyteller and not like a staff writer for daytime TV. Naming your salvation-seeking iterant sex worker main character Holly, short for Hallelujah, is some peak dumb guy shit, and that album was top five of the year for Pitchfork.

Ok look... I get that Mickey can be a divisive personality on RM. I really do. But I don't understand how any rational human reads that post and doesn't stand up and applaud how fucking great it is. I'm serious.

Holy shit.

The grad school version of that post is that 9/11 and the Iraq War introduced such a crisis in American pop culture historicity that every music journalist in the country found themselves reading blithe Kerouac references as the new Bob Dylan.

That just speaks to Pitchfork and possibly the people who take it seriously.

Wait, ... people take Pitchfork seriously?!
People did take Pitchfork seriously in 2005 and 2006, when they named the second and third HS albums "Best New Music." But it wasn't just Pitchfork: NPR described Hold Steady as "lyrically dense storytelling," and both albums ended up on a ton of end-of-year lists (Just cribbing from the Wiki, Boys and Girls was number one at both Magnet and the AV Club, number 9 at Yahoo, while Separation Sunday was top ten for Spin).
