In my opinion one thing that could restart the troubles would be if Scotland passed legislation for another independence referendum and the UK blocks it. People accept the Good Friday Agreement, that any unification referendum would have to be sensitive to the Unionists just as NI within the UK has to be sensitive to people who want a UI. They accept that this is the reason for NI not having the power to simply unify on majority rule. This could unravel if the UK sticks its oar into Scotland.

Well a UI needs a 50+1 in both NI and Ireland to pass.
It’s not in the gift of the UK to allow or block that as it’s a tenet of the GFA for a ref to be called if there’s sufficient support for it. (That’s growing daily)

They can and will block Scotland having a referendum though.

Can someone just give me the bulletpoints of what's happening? I know Johnsons had been pushing for a no-deal Brexit, and parliament conservatives are pushing against that. Now he's saying he's going to call immediate elections, to ostensibly get them voted out? Is that right? And he can do that? Or what am I missing?

The opposition (Labour, Lib Dems, SNP, etc) along with quite a few Tories (Conservatives) are against No Deal, since it will cost thousands of jobs and throw the country into turmoil. They have put forward a motion to extend the time before brexit to January, and to block No Deal.

Boris and the government is against this motion. They want a free hand in dealing with the EU, and may even go for No Deal in October.

About 30 Tories said they were interested in backing the motion. The government whip said those who voted against the party would «lose the whip» which is the step before expulsion.

21 still voted against, and with the support of the opposition, the motion passed. The 21 then did «lose the whip». This includes several former ministers, the father of the house, and the grandson of Churchill.

They are still voting on the motion today, to make it law.

Boris now wants an election, and the 21 will probably not be allowed to run as Tories.
