On the bright side, you can get much paler than the Wrigley performance of LB. The studio version should be good, because there's a decent song in there somewhere.
There's some interesting stuff going on. There's some sort of spacey McCready lick after one of the verses...
That should've said 'can't get much paler'. Yeah, there are bits I like but other parts are really clumsy.
"Clumsy" is a good word for that performance. The whole thing sounded like two left feet.

I have to believe the studio version sounds way cooler with more going on b/c they clearly love it so much that they named the album after it.

I have to believe.
It's a real possibility. I'm nervous that the entire album kind of hangs on it, but also quite relieved, because if it's shit I won't have to try hard to lower expectations, I'll listen to the rest with an open mind. Whatever happens, I'm glad it's the opening song; if you're going to have a title track, it makes sense to open with it. It makes the intention feel clearer and more deliberate.
Wait - opening song? That's Getaway. LB is track 5. Or as I think of it, the Black/Dissident spot.

It's not the opening song is it? It's track 5. Or did you mean something else?

Shit, you're right. Not sure why I said that, probably because that's what I thought it would be before the order changed. Yeah, this album will suck.

Yeah, before they changed the order I was sure we had it in reverse order and it would begin with LB / MYM....

They changed the order in my head and I'm psychologically fragile at the moment.

FD is starting to grow on me as a closer. I think the lyrics are really kind of decent for the sentiment being expressed. Hopefully it acts as a cathartic release after a whirlwind blitz of an album.

Yep. If the album's been fast, loud, weird or whatever, the cute sentimentality to finish it off might even work. Kind of like the cheesy pop song you get at the end of a horror film.

I'm really glad it's not in the middle of the album.

Me too. Huge sigh of relief.

It makes me think that it'll be used as the calm after the storm. The *ahem* release, if you will.

Yeah. One test of that will be whether there are any other schlocky ballads to kill the momentum anywhere else. Slightly worried about 'My Father's Son' being roughly in the same place as Just Breathe.

My only potential issue with it's placement would be if it was the opener. Can you imagine if that BOB keyboard intro was the 1st thing you hear on the album?

Billboard wrote:Pearl Jam spent the week teasing fans with a two-title-a-day tweeted track list reveal for its upcoming album "Lightning Bolt," which culminated yesterday (August 30) with the band sharing the full 12-song list and running order.

The new Pearl Jam album, which is due October 15 in the U.S., will include already released single "Mind Your Manners," as well as the two tunes the group debuted live at Chicago's Wrigley Field last month: the rocking title track, and a ballad called "Future Days." The album also contains a version of "Sleeping By Myself," a song which first appeared on singer Eddie Vedder's 2011 solo album "Ukulele Songs."

"Lightning Bolt" producer Brendan O'Brien, who also plays keys on "Future Days," tells Billboard that "Mind Your Manners" is the "tip of the iceberg" of what listeners can expect. He calls out the song "Sirens" as a highlight, and describes it by saying, "I wouldn't call it a ballad but there's a depth to it."

"Lightning Bolt" is Pearl Jam's 10th studio album and it's and the band's first studio effort since 2009's "Backspacer." "I think it's a great representation of their work right now," O'Brien says of the new album. "If you like Pearl Jam, you'll love this. And if you haven't listened to Pearl Jam in awhile, I think it's going to bring you in. That's the whole idea."

Fans will have to keep waiting for a studio version of "Of The Earth," however. The song, which the band has only played live, is not on "Lightning Bolt." "Whether that'll show up at some point, I'm not sure," O'Brien says.
